Dr. Steven Jerome Mcallen, MD

I've been a patient of Dr. McAllen's for over ten years. He's bright, quick to pick up on issues, a very good listener, and very easy to talk to. If there's any issue with him, it's that he has limited time for each patient, and thus it's possible for patients with multiple conditions that he might miss something. I make out a note in advance, and give him one copy and keep a copy for myself. It works out fine for us. In one urgent situation on a Sunday, he responded by phone within 30 minutes. In my opinion, this is a good Doctor and a fine person who has to deal with all the limitations of private practice that we all face in America today. I highly recommend Dr. Mcallen.

after coming back from 2 week cruise with very bad coughing he told me to wash my hands more often, no meds, no follow up, nada! Since I have HMO I have no choice for other Drs., the good ones are not available.

Wants to treat symptoms rather than dig down and try to find 'causes'. Misses too much. He 'burned out' too quickly. Merely mention (no more than 'mention') the fact that this morning your back aches and you will be billed as having had a 'diagnosis' of bone pain. Collect the buck and move on.

No matter how long you have been going to Dr. McAllen, he has little idea of your condition. Does not bother to read what few notes he has made in your chart, and seems to just 'wing it' at the time of your visit. After the customary 'Hello', if you say you are tired that day, he'll check 'Exhaustion' on the list of things he is seeing you for. Casually mention you have a slight back ache, another check; make a passing remark about the heat, he'll mark you as being treated for 'Heat exhaustion'! Seems more concerned with piling on the charges than with giving patients serious attention. Have talked with others who feel the same way. If you want a physician who, at least, will give you the impression of being concerned with your welfare, you might want to look elsewhere.

This MD IS is very poor at follow up. Does not do detailed paper work. Does not remember last appointment or probably even your name. Does not listen to his messages or return important phone calls personally. Office staff is very friendly. He is burned out.

Dr. McAllen and his staff are real gems in a crazy world. They all are caring and go the extra mile for you. I always recommend him.
