Dr. Steven Mark Scharf, MD

I met Dr. Scharf by accident when he needed to attend to the equipment being administered to me at the UofMd Sleep Study Unit. The equipment was malfunctioning and he not only corrected the equipment, but he also actually gave me my FIRST diagnosis of my breathing disorder that I have been suffering with for 1-1/2 yrs. Over 35 other doctors had no answer for me! Dr. Scharf's attention to my medical condition was a major break through for me! He is insanely intelligent, funny and down to earth. As busy as he is, I felt privileged that he took the time to help me and follow my case! You MUST request him, he has over 40 years of amazing experience and he cuts to the chase!

This is the guy to see if your neighborhood sleep doc hasn't helped. He listens and has remarkable insight. When you schedule, ask to see Dr. S even if they will have a fellow see you 1st. Accept no substitutes. He doesn't just rubber stamp the trainee's recommendation. Dr. Scharf is in demand. Sometimes these appointment take 30 minuets other times 2 hours. Its worth the wait.

Coming in for my appointment, I was greeted by the office's wonderful staff. Everyone was very courteous. After the nursing staff took vitals and did the typical intake interview, I was seen by a fellow working under Dr. Scharf. He did a diagnostic review of my medical history, addressed my main concerns, gave his recommendations for further review, and discussed possible treatment options. Since he was a fellow, he needed Dr. Scharf to review his recommendations and give the final 'go'. He told me that Scharf would be in to review everything in a matter of minutes. I waited just under one HOUR in the examination room, listening to him chat nonchalantly with someone for the majority of that hour. When the fellow peaked in to see if Dr. Scharf could see me, he was very rude to the fellow and said he was busy and will see me when he sees me. I decided to leave. As I was checking out, it seems he magically found time to see me. When I informed him that I had to leave, he dramatically… threw his hands up in the air and turned his back to me. It was really funny, because my seven year old sister did that EXACT same thing when she got in a huff about her toy taken away. Rude doesn't begin to describe him -- not just to me, but it seems he treats all his staff the same way. He barked at me to reschedule if I wanted. As you can imagine, I gave him a blatant no. The office staff members were wonderful. The physician seems to have lost his people skills after years of practicing. I would highly recommend against seeing him if you wish to be treated like you're more than a means for his income.
