Summary

Dr. Shamash completed his undergraduate training at the Binghamton University of The State University of New York receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He subsequently attended the University at Buffalo-The State University of New York where he received his Master of Science degree, while performing clinical research in colorectal cancer. He is a graduate of the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine where he graduated in the top 15% of his graduating class. Dr Shamash completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He served as the chief orthopedic resident during his senior year and received the Henrietta and Jack Avart Memorial award; given to the Orthopedic Surgery resident who has exhibited exceptional competency in Orthopedic Surgery during their training program. Upon his graduation, Dr. Shamash, went on to complete an additional fellowship in hand, upper extremity and microvascular surgery at the prestigious New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center in New York City.

Dr Shamash joined Garden State Orthopedic Associates in 2008 and has since focused his orthopedic practice to the care of hand, wrist and elbow injuries. He specializes in the care of fractures of the hand, wrist and elbow as well as the surgical and nonsurgical treatment of bone, muscle, tendon, ligament and nerve injuries within the upper extremity. Dr Shamash is also qualified and trained to administer Xiaflex, a collagenase injection used for the nonsurgical treatment of Dupuytren's disease, a genetic condition that causes flexion contractures of the fingers. Dr Shamash has had tremendous success treating these patients.

Dr Shamash has always had a passion for teaching and In addition to his busy clinical practice, he has recently taken on the academic position of program director for a new Orthopedic Surgery residency program at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine.

One of his research projects, Akinbo O, Shamash SB, Strauch RJ. “Anatomic and radiographic study of the ipsilateral vs. contralateral proximal fibula for use in distal radius osteo-articular reconstruction” was published by the prestigious American Journal of Orthopedics in 2010

In October 2014, Dr Shamash received the award of Fellow of the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics in recognition of his outstanding achievements and contributions to the practice of orthopedic surgery.

Dr Shamash takes a conservative approach to treating his patients and feels as though the most important factor in achieving excellent results is open communication as well as realistic patient expectations. He finds it very important for every patient to understand their diagnosis and to play a key role in the decision of which treatment option is best suited for that patient.

Dr Shamash has privileges at The Valley Hospital, St Joseph's Medical Center as well as The Malo Ambulatory Surgery Center in Rutherford, NJ

He lives in Bergen County with his wife and three children.
