Dr. Steven R. Wheelwright, DO

I wanted to take a minute and talk about my experience with Dr. Wheelwright. My family and I moved to Layton, Utah a few years ago and we weren't exactly sure why. Then we got pregnant with our second child and looked up an OBGYN. We found Dr. Wheelwright and he was getting great reviews online. We scheduled a consultation and he took as much time as we needed to make sure we felt comfortable and listened too. I continued my care with him and as my pregnancy went on, I had some major blood sugar issues, where I would drop dangerously low and food would not always help to bring my levels back up. We worked with Dr. Wheelwright, a Maternal Fetal Medical Specialist, and an Endocrinologist to try and figure out what was going on. (Dr. Wheelwright brought the team of experts together to ensure I was getting the best care). It got so bad that I was not able to manage it at home and Dr. Wheelwright suggested I be checked into the hospital - for 45 days and home health for months - for… continuous treatment. (I had to be hooked up to a continuous IV for months 24/7 to pump sugar water into my body). During that time, he had a number of tests done to find out why this was happening and what he could do to keep my baby safe. After my MRI scan, I was diagnosed with Nesidioblastosis (a pancreatic disorder where insulin is fired off at random times to drop my blood sugar) and Hypoglycemia Unawareness (meaning I do not feel symptoms of low blood sugar and could pass out, have seizures or even die). This was a serious diagnosis, especially while I was pregnant. He fought my insurance to get a CGM approved (continuous glucose monitor) for me so my phone would alert me when my levels were starting to drop. It was approved and my life was so much easier. He would check on me daily via text and would visit me every single day while I was in the hospital. He would spend countless hours researching my diagnosis and how to treat it. He involved an entire team of experts, about 5 other doctors who were top of their field to help him manage my symptoms and find a solution. They investigated experimental treatment to see how they could keep me and my baby alive. But Dr. Wheelwright always made suggestions and asked me what I thought. He let me manage my care. Throughout this process, Dr. Wheelwright was so kind and listened to me and my concerns. He always communicated with me. He even installed a blood sugar app on his phone to monitor my levels 24/7 and would get notified if they dropped, even in the middle of the night. He always called the nursing station when that happened to ensure I was taken care of. I have never had a doctor take such good care of me. After a lot of treatment, we were able to keep my baby in until 35 weeks! It was a miracle and the NICU nurses said it was amazing that he did that, because there was no way I was going to make it past 24 weeks, let alone keep me alive as well. We now knew why we moved to Layton, Utah. It was to have him as our doctor. I truly believe if it was anyone else, we would not have had this same ending. He was and is our miracle and my personal hero! He literally saved my life and my baby's life! I cannot say enough good things about him. I would highly recommend him to ANYONE. He deserves a substantial raise and to be recognized world-wide for his amazing work and care.
