Subject: A Truly Eye-Opening Experience with Dr. Suma Hoffman, MD I’d like to thank Dr. Suma Hoffman, MD, for her incredibly reassuring words during one of the most devastating times of my life. After the hospital staff knowingly gave my baby a lung disease, Dr. Hoffman provided me with the comforting assurance that, should my daughter pass, it wouldn’t be from her brain. No, it would be from the lung disease they had inflicted upon her—what a relief to hear it in such a nonchalant manner. What’s even more concerning is that this comes after they misdiagnosed my daughter, calling her brain dead—only for them to turn around and casually tell me that her death would now be caused by the lung disease they gave her. It almost feels like an attempt to cover up the misdiagnosis, as if it was more important to shift blame than to properly address the harm they caused. It’s truly unsettling to know that while the hospital mismanaged her care, they also made sure to cover their tracks, as… though her life was just another routine case to be swept under the rug. The lack of empathy Dr. Hoffman displayed was truly eye-opening. Instead of recognizing the gravity of the situation and taking responsibility for their actions, she casually reassured me that her passing would be due to the lung disease they had given her, as if this were just another routine medical condition that could easily be dismissed. The callousness with which she dismissed my daughter’s life and the harm they caused was shocking. I truly appreciate the hospital for showing me that, in some cases, patients are just a footnote in the doctors’ work. It was comforting to witness firsthand how easily a doctor can dismiss a mistake of such magnitude and place no real value on the life of a child. I’m sure Dr. Hoffman’s words and the actions of the hospital staff will leave a lasting impression on me, but I hope it’s not one that others will have to experience. It’s almost as though the hospital is unwilling to take accountability for the devastating mistakes made here, and I can only hope that this review helps prompt some level of reflection on how to treat not just the patients, but also their families. This kind of treatment should not be overlooked or brushed under the rug.
