Dr. Sumeet Asrani, MD

I initially had a very positive experience with this doctor. He greeted me warmly, said he’d reviewed my file, and asked why I believed I was there—a gesture that made me feel heard and respected. We had a thoughtful 45-minute conversation about my elevated liver enzymes, my medication list, and my concerns about being on a GLP-1 for diabetes. I’ve lost significant weight, and now that I’m on a maintenance dose, my liver function tests are worsening. He agreed to increasing the GLP-1 to see if it might affect the liver for the positive and continued postponing heart medication until we received results from a specialized test. I left feeling hopeful. Unfortunately, that hope didn’t last. It took over a week for him to review the test results from his downtown office, and when I followed up, I was told they weren’t in yet—even though I’d completed them a week prior in his office and he's the only one who can read them. The only message I received was “Tell patient to stay on the agreed… weight loss plan.” There was no such plan. I’m not trying to lose more weight, and I made that clear. I requested two callbacks and asked him to coordinate with my PCP. Neither happened. My liver function remains elevated, and the only consistent message I’ve received is one that implies my weight is the problem—despite the fact that I’ve already lost a substantial amount and am not actively trying to lose more. This experience went from compassionate to dismissive. I felt reduced to a number on a scale rather than treated as a whole person with complex medical concerns. I cannot recommend this provider based on the lack of follow-through, poor communication, and oversimplified assumptions about my health.

Dr Asrani has taken care of our son for over a year now for both liver and bowel issues. He is such a nice person and so easy to talk to! Whenever we have questions or concerns we call Mayo and Dr A calls us back. He genuinely seems to care about his patients and we are very thankful to have found him.
