Dr. Susan Martha Lobel, MD

Dr. Lobel is unparalleled in knowledge, skill and heart. I originally went to a large NYC hospital practice - the doctor there had no bedside manner (he gave me negative test results while doing an invasive procedure which also did not go well) and then sent me away crying to make another appointment, made an incorrect diagnosis without having done all the routine tests, ad the practice was a factory with a different person conducting each test. I went to Dr. Lobel for a second opinion and I thank my lucky stars for having met her. She does this from her heart and is incredibly caring. She holds my hands every time I have a procedure. Dr. Lobel does ALL your tests at every appointment (not multiple different nurses), teaches you how to do your injections (instead of sending you to a class), and personally calls you (in my case almost every day) to discuss medication adjustments. Dr. Lobel did exploratory surgery and discovered additional fertility issues that routine tests did not… discover (my OBs commented on what a great job she did on fixing those issues during surgery). When I suffered an ectopic pregnancy, Dr. Lobel was with me every step of the way, even giving me her personal contact information. When a protocol did not work, she did research and consulted with doctors worldwide to figure out a better protocol. Dr. Lobel clearly explains the procedures and what to expect after each appointment. She clearly explains risks. She also will adjust the protocol if there are any setbacks. When we go over the plan, she does not give false hope unlike other doctors who are willing to do procedures that they don't think will work just so they can make money. Many practices will not work with a patient whose routine test results come back bad or will automatically jump to using a donor or surrogate in order to increase their "success" rates. Dr. Lobel takes the hard cases that they will not and will go above and beyond to try to help you have a biological child if that is what you wish (although she will not do treatments that she does not think have a realistic chance of success). I found her approach to be thoughtful and balanced and she always answered any questions my husband and I had. Despite multiple infertility issues, I got pregnant! When I was pregnant, every nurse and doctor at he OB practice sang her praises, including one doctor who was her medical school professor who said she was the brightest student he ever had. Even though I was no longer her patient, Dr. Lobel would still call me to check in on me. I have sent multiple friends to her and they all love her. One friend went to another practice for 5 years and never had a transfer. She got pregnant on her second cycle with Dr. Lobel and now has a healthy baby. I know how difficult this process is physically, emotionally and financially and cannot recommend a better doctor to help on this journey.

We met Dr. Lobel years ago and feel very fortunate to have done so. Like anyone facing fertility issues the stress can be extremely overwhelming and finding a knowledge doctor along with a warm and welcoming environment isn’t always a guarantee. Dr. Lobel really encompasses both. We’ve had ups and downs but Dr. Lobel has always been there for us. The personalized care we received is really incredible since it has made the procsess less stressful in a process that isn’t easy to go through. She truly took her time to explain things and provided support when we needed it. We were finally blessed with a child almost 6 years ago and now have another one on the way. Dr. Lobel is truly a gem!

Don’t believe all the past reviews. Dr Lobel is friendly, accommodating, and personal care at it’s max. During my fertility journey, she was able to ensure we were given the best treatment. Communication was great and so different from any other practice. She was willing to work with our schedule and she is very warm during hard times. You definitely want someone like Dr Lobel on your side and her expertise is amazing. I can’t thank Dr Lobel more as my miracle is growing!

A physician who totally lacks the ability to empathize. Her knowledge base is possibly one of appreciation but her rude and torturous manner override any ability to provide satisfactory patient care. I pity any staff members that need to spend even one day with her. Lobel is a perfect example of why medical institutions need to filter their candidates prior to admitting them to any medical program where they will have contact with patient populations.

Susan Lobel has an issue with communication and bedside manner. We endured many uncomfortable episodes of being hung up on and long stretches of time waiting for her to get back to us about important issues while we were using donor embryos. I watched my life pass before my eyes as I was getting older and she would disappear for 2-3 months at a time on us. At the moment we have left 5 messages over the last 7 months which have gone unanswered. We spent over $150K and wanted to have some sort of closure and understanding of how our journey could have ended up with no baby but she doesn't care about that. I would consider working with another doctor if you are about to start any sort of treatment. During our years we mostly felt that we had to walk on eggshells and never knew when we would get the doctor that was in a good mood or the doctor that wold be dismissive, curt or hang up on us. There were times I had my husband call because I couldn't handle the possible… rudeness. The reason we stayed for so long was that I was an older patient and our insurance didn't give us coverage for fertility ANYTHING including testing and in order to switch caregivers we would have had to repeat tests and start over with no coverage so we stuck it out and ended up with no baby.

Dr. Lobel is one of the nicest/ sweetest doctors you could hope to have. She spends so much time with her patients, has a very sharp memory and is encouraging. She is a great choice for a fertility doctor! Don't believe the negative reviews.

After a second trimester termination due to a chromosomal abnormality I had literally lost faith in myself and doubted that I could ever have a healthy baby again. Dr Lobel was with me every step of the way. Not only did she encourage me from a psychological standpoint at every appointment, but she worked hard to make sure i got pregnant again under the best possible circumstances. I received very personalized care and now I have a 4 week old, beautiful and healthy baby girl. All due to Dr Lobel.

Everyone is looking for different things in their RE so I won't get into what I think of her personality. My one star review is based entirely on her professionalism. Getting medical records from her is an absolute nightmare. Expect to several weeks for a call back (depending on whether she has an assistant that week) and once a call back expect an unpleasant conversation, then wait for the records that never arrive. After a few of these cycles you'll likely end up charging her office in fury. When you get the records they will be 1) entirely out of order 2) handwritten in a way that your next RE will be shaking their head 3) incomplete. Note: do outline what you must have. I know, you'd think everything. That's not going to happen so make a wish list. In fact, if you see her I think your best bet is to never leave her office without a copy of what happened that day. If you need her to call insurance expect a slightly less dramatic experience but still one that you'll tell… your friends about when the topic of 'nightmare medical experiences' arises. Lastly, if you have a miscarriage she will do a most bizarre thing: offer you three options for how to handle the tragic event. Yet, if you don't chose the one she wants she will go cold and make you feel like you personally offended her.

Dr. Lobel acted in an unprofessional and cowardly manner toward us, in a time of great emotional sensitivity and hope, as we embarked on our journey trying to conceive. She has created a great deal of stress and emotional distress in a time when we need to be at our best - calm and happy - to create a life. She blew out of proportion a small misunderstanding in our rush to get medical records and everything ready for our upcoming insemination, and used that as an excuse to disengage her services 4 days prior to insemination. She hasn't even had the courage and decency to deal with us directly and will only communicate through her receptionist, and is making getting our final records more complicated that it needs to be, so we can move on. I have no idea where the negative reviews are coming from! Dr Lobel is so warm and has a wonderful bedside manner. She really spends time listening and thinking about your case, which you won't get at other practices. She genuinely cares about her patients. She is unbelievably smart (Harvard trained) and knows her stuff. You will notice that all the reviews are either 4 stars or 1 star - and I know firsthand that the 4 stars are right and the 1 stars are dead wrong!
