Dr. Swasha Dion Fields, MD

My mother was a patient of Dr Fields. We recently made the hard decision to have my mom go under Hospice care due to a rapid decline in her health. As her primary physician, Dr Fields needed to send a referral to Hospice before we could proceed with them taking over her care. I’m well aware that calling Dr Fields office is an excercise in futility. The phone goes unanswered for days at a time and leaving a message may get a call back days later. Due to the urgency of my mom’s need for Hospice, my dad went to the office on Friday to get the referral. Hospice also sent a request directly to the office. My dad was told that the request for the referral would be sent to Dr Fields and would be handled by the end of the day. The front office went as far as saying they would call to confirm when the referral was sent. Unfortunately, we did not receive a call confirming the referral was sent nor did Hospice receive it. On Saturday I called the office weekend on call service and explained the… need for the Hospice referral. Shortly after that, received a call directly from Dr Fields. She was sure to express her annoyance with me calling on a weekend. I tried to keep my composure and explained that I desperately needed her assistance with getting a referral. During our conversation she lacked compassion, sympathy and bed side manner. She scolded me and schooled me on her office hours and her lack of access to email/fax which is how Hospice could receive the referral. In the end she got off the phone saying she would call and tell hospice that she anticipated sending a referral on behalf of my mom. I’m thankful to say, she did at least call Hospice and that allowed them to come see my mom the next day. She may be a great doctor and have a great understanding of medicine. However, her lack of compassion for another human being and their suffering was something worth warning other people about.
