Dr. Sylvester Mcrae, MD

I am shocked at some of the reviews that I am reading! I had my son back in 2003. Even then I heard his bedside manner was horrible but being on Medicaid I didn't feel like I had much of a choice in expressing my desire to change doctors. When I say he literally ripped my son out of me, I am not kidding. I am 5'2, my son weighed over 8 pounds so I imagined that I did not some help but my sons head came out looking like a pancake (he used forceps). If you have ever seen a flounder, that is what my son's head looked like. 13 years later, he is still behind his peers, in everything; reading, math, comprehending. I can't say for sure that this was at the hands of him but my advice to anyone, would just be to go to another doctor, or do your research and monitor every step of the delivery or have someone else in the room do it for the night.

He was my obgyn, and he did not care about me. Every time I came in for an appointment I felt like a number. The doctor wouldn't take any time to answer my questions, and was irritated a few times because i had questions. He would always tell me to make another appointment if you want him to get something done. After one of the visits where my questions weren't answered I called and wanted to speak with someone about my question. The nurse called me back and told me to schedule another appointment. I asked the front desk how my appointment is being billed since i wasn't sure if my insurance would pay for it. They scheduled it as a talk. He made sure he got paid for answering my question that he didn't answer during my visit. I had an impression that he is in the business just for the money. Everything was about the money. He sent me to do extra procedures that I didn't need (I had 3 ultrasounds in my first trimester!!!! for what!!!), and then doesn't even discuss the results with… you. He wanted to induce me prior to my due date without any medical reason. I refused. I am just happy he wasn't the one who delivered my baby. He is horrible!!!! Do not use him!!!!

I am so frustrated with this office! Everything seems very disorganized. A copy of my ID card was apparently lost and they also forgot to record my due date! I waited over an hour in nothing but a gown to see the doctor. When I actually received care, I felt extremely rushed throughout the entire appointment. The staff were not overly friendly and the total time for my first prenatal appointment was over 3 hours (85% of that time was waiting). Not to mention the wait time when calling the office. This isn't making for a happy experience. Caring for my unborn child is not something that I take lightly, and neither should they.

I would not recommend this Dr.to anyone...don't take time out for his patients and their concerns..he comes in and out those rooms so fast that you don't have time to even talk to him about anything..his biggest thing is he doesn't get to no his patients at all and you can barely get in contact with the office.. always get the answering service..that's ok I'll just stick to my SC doctors they are the best!!! healing just fine and that I was able to return to work if I wanted to ad that I was able to driver out of town if I wanted to...so I took his word and drove out of town to visit family but still wasn't feeling like myself..got to my home town on a Wednesday and by Monday night I was at the emergency room bleeding badly to find out my vaginal vault had done came apart..whew i felt like I was bout to die..tried to call office to let them no what had happen and all I could get was their after hour emergency call line..finally to speak to on call… person to get in touch with office.. but in the mean time I felt like he didn't take time to hear me out the first couple of visits and wasn't concern of what had happen and still not concern but I'll probably hear from the office next week about an up coming spot but guess what...not!!

I have been a patient of Dr. McRae for 25 years. He is one of the most patient and caring doctors that I have ever been to. He really cares about the patient.He performed surgery on me in 1994 and I had no problems at all afterwards.His staff is extremely courteous and helpful.I hope he never retires.

I cant speak on anyone else but i didn't like the service I received while visiting his office his wife is so rude.He is a nice man I will say that much.

I wish I had known then what I know now. My first childbirth experience was horrible and extremely traumatic due to the the incompetence of Dr. Crandall Chambers and Dr. Sylvester McRae. During my last prenatal appointment, I was told that I needed to go over to The Medical Center so that some tests could be performed. This didn't strike me as unusual, however once I arrived at The Medical Center I was told that I was being admitted because Dr. Chambers had decided that I would have my labor induced via pitocin. His reason for inducing my labor was "so that I wouldn't have a 9 pound baby" and possible c-section. I was ignorant at the time in assuming that doctors knew best and had the best interest of their patients in mind. I agreed to allow my labor to be induced (even though I was still weeks away from my due date). I sat at the hospital, attached to an IV until I would no longer stand it. I told the nurses that I was leaving, and I went home. When I got home that evening… (Wednesday), I began having contractions. These lasted for several days. I was finally readmitted into the hospital on Sunday. When I gave birth to my daughter on Sunday, Dr. Chambers was nowhere to be found. So I was left to deliver my baby with Dr. Sylvester McRae, who was arrogant, uncaring, rude and unprofessional. I was not made aware that receiving an epidural would affect my ability to push during labor, so after about 5 minutes or so of ineffective pushing, Dr. McRae decided he would pull my baby out using a vacuum. I was also given an episiotomy unneccesarily and was sewn up crooked. It has been nearly 7 years since the birth of my first child and I still experience discomfort due to the botched job. My advice is to stay far away from these doctors. If you are expecting or planning to have a child, I would seek out the assistance of a certified (preferably Traditional) midwife or doula and look into having a natural homebirth, or at least a hospital birth with a midwife. Please do your research. Don't allow yourself to be tricked into any unnecessary torture. Childbirth is a natural occurance and should be treated as special, instead of just another routine operation. I will never bring another child into this world with a doctor.

Dr. McRae is an excellent doctor. His bed side manner is top notch... I have recommended him to all of my friends. My daughter is expecting her first child and of course he is her OBGYN.
