Dr. Syra Hanif, MD

The adequate: Everyone here is pleasant. The office is illuminated, tidy, and easy to get to by public transportation. The unfortunate truth: In my experience, Dr. Hanif is a glorified data entry and referral agent. She never physically examines your body. Literally never looks at your place of concern. Instead, she writes notes in her computer about what you report is painful. Relying on you, the patient, to tell her what you need. She recommends no professional insight. Make sure to SPELL out the exact nature of your injury to get the referral for the appropriate procedure or specialist. It is impossible to speak to her or a nurse at any time aside from the rushed encounter in the office. Her process is to breeze into the exam room 45-60 minutes late without acknowledging she made you wait. I keep to a schedule, so I am already nervous by the late start and disrespected by the time she enters to room. In the scheduled 10-15 minute appointment time, she quickly reviews her… computer notes. Asking you redundant questions for procedures she ordered. Then she'll refer you to a specialist and set an unnecessary follow-up appointment. Afterward, you are sent to the front desk where the receptionist talks, in front of everyone in the waiting area, about the specifics of your referrals. All the while checking in and out other patients at the same time. I am dumbfounded as to why they don't have a dedicated exit desk personnel to manage follow-up doctor's orders. Save your money for a COVID test. Check the NYC Department of Health for same-day walk-in PCR or Rapid testing for FREE. The DOH Fort Greene location provides free PCR test results on the same day. MMA charges $130 PCR and $50 Rapid tests to everyone including Medicaid insured.

I saw Dr Hanif for my annual physical. Nice staff and clean office. I required a follow up appt to receive my lab results from my annual. My co-pay is $50 so I asked if they could just send me my lab results which they did. I was happy to see all normal readings including my thyroid numbers. I asked for a refill of my thyroid medication and Dr Hanif refused to fill it stating I need a follow up. I was so confused that I called a few close friends who are MDs and they all said it’s very unreasonable for her to withhold my medication and luckily one of them after seeing my results gave me a years worth of refills. I def will not be going back to this doctor.

I have never had a worse experience interacting with a medical office. The doctor was nice enough, although she was pretty rushed - hardly looking at me. She didn't even ask if I had been vaccinated for Covid. The rest of it, a nightmare. My lab work was never given to me, though I called for it. They randomly did a spirometer test (why?) and the results were alarming (saying I had an obstruction in my lung and had the lungs of an 84 year old and I'm 59 -- I have no symptoms of this but I guess they charge insurance for it) -- I found out because I finally insisted a month later they put the results on the portal -- but no one thought to call me about it. I was told when I came in the following week for a thyroid ultrasound (which she recommended and they scheduled) and a pap (which she said she'd be doing) she would go over my results. She not only wasn't there, but when I showed up for the thyroid ultrasound (having driven 6 hrs round trip) I was told a) I was there for a carotid… ultrasound (I was not) and b) that they couldn't do the thyroid ultrasound because it wasn't covered by insurance. The only way the doctor will discuss my labs with me now - or even have a conversation with my about all I am unhappy with, is if I schedule and pay for an appt. My patient portal is filled with misinformation -- including tests and scans I didn't have. In addition, I have a "gatekeeper plan" and my PCP has to refer me to any specialists -- and she couldn't give me ONE name. Not one referral -- even a GYN. The staff is cold and hardly cared about what I was experiencing and the doctor obviously could care less. -- addendum: Several days after writing this, I found out that not only was some of my blood work sample held too long (aka too old and improperly kept) and therefore invalid for some tests, but they finally called 2 weeks (and only after I called to complain and speak to the doctor) and said the reason the doctor wants me to come in is because the PAP sample was also improperly or insufficiently taken and they want me to come back to have it done again. They have failed me on every step. Not a chance I'll be back.

I appreciate the quality of medical service the guys are providing to the people of Manhattan. Doctors, paramedics and all the support staff are all well trained and professional.

Dr. Syra Hanif is my primary doctor for about a year now. She has been wonderful, very caring, listens to all my concerns, and explains the process of all procedures before they occur. She follows up very well and some of the nurses are just excellent.

I happened to visit MMA recently for the treatment of an allergy. The doctor was very professional. She listened to the details carefully and explained the treatment very well. I was quite satisfied with the treatment and it turned out to be very effective too.

The most professional and friendly Physician in Chelsea. She is efficient, and communication was clear.

Dr Syra is an excellent primary care physician and extremely professional. I happened to visit her recently. I was a bit nervous since it was my first appointment with her, but it turned out to be a great experience.

Really lovely doctor who listened to all my concerns before diagnosing. The waiting staff were nice and I was seen within 10 mins of my appt time.
