Dr. Tatjana Deretic, MD

I used to hate Dr.D, but I’m glad I stuck by her. I didn’t understand her style until it sunk in. She can be harsh and say controversial things, but ultimately she has a point and does it to challenge you. I’ve made immense progress with her and retract every bad thing I’ve ever said. She takes time to get used to, especially if you aren’t used to tough love, but she knows what she’s doing

Tatjana Deretic is one of the worst medical practitioners my family and I have had the misfortune of working with. She prescribed an incorrect medicine with extremely high dose to one of my children. Because of this unusually high dose of an incorrect medication, my child essentially lost at least 3 years of their life. I am shocked that Deretic did not even care enough for my child’s wellbeing. Despite requesting her several times, she delayed sending a letter to my child’s school by several months. My child needed this letter to get support from their school for their ADHD & severe anxiety issues. Worse, the letter Deretic finally submitted (after pleading a number of times) was so poorly written that the school simply tossed it out! Consequently, my child did not get any help from their school which they desperately needed. Deretic charged us $100 to send this letter to my child’s school- something which I never have experienced with any other medical care provider. Another of… my children was Deretic’s patient for 8 years. Yet, Deretic refused to give them an important letter they needed for insurance purpose. We had to switch to a different psychiatrist who cared for my child enough to provide the letter. These are just a few damaging aspects about Deretic. I strongly caution others from using Tatjana Deretic’s services. She proved herself to be incompetent, extremely uncaring, and greedy.

It would be nice if dissatisfied people will disclose their names and be willing to openly talk about what happened. Every story has at least two sides if not even more. All reviews are one sided and without open and transparent communication are only worth so much. We need to learn not to hide behind internet. We need to learn to openly talk to our doctors when things do not go right and to try to find solutions. Nobody is perfect and there is room for improvements on all sides. Dr. Deretic doesn’t take the time to make her patients feel safe and secure before diving into personal issues and urging for medication. She imposes her own viewpoints on career paths, marriage, and college. she doesn’t take into account cultural and personal identity, nor environmental factors that might be difficult to talk about during the first couple appointments. As a 17 year old patient, I was told to leave the room on multiple occasions so she could talk to my parents about medication options and childhood history without consulting with me. Overall, I did not have a safe space, I did not feel understood, and I felt like my privacy was violated. I came into her appointments optimistic and open to growth and healing. But every time I left I was angry and mentally exhausted. I now have switched to a therapist that I feel much more understood and comfortable with. The difference in approach is transparent and proves jumping straight into medicine is not always the best option.

Saved my child’s future

Dr. Deretic worked in conjunction with my therapist, and I found her to go above and beyond the normal practices of other psychiatrists I have seen. She treated me for major depression, and as well as helping me to establish an effective medication regime, we engaged in very effective talk therapy. She is a tough cookie, and doesn't take excuses, and is not an enabler, but is still very caring and warm-hearted. I would highly recommend her services. She helped me to create a foundation for mental wellness, and I haven't had a major episode for the last 5 years. I was 15 years old when I started seeing Dr. Deretic. She misdiagnosed me with some pretty severe mental illnesses that no one ever suspected and completely disregarded environmental factors that were the actual cause of what was happening to me. She had me go on very very strong medications, these medications made me a shell of a human, but she claimed that my change in personality was just me "growing up", and brushed off my concerns. For two years I begged her to take me off the medication (I had to be carefully monitored as withdrawal from these medications could be deadly), eventually she listened, but when my anxiety increased after starting to titrate off the meds she used that to reconfirm her diagnosis. I ended up getting a neuro-psych evaluation, after reading the report she called the neuropsychologist and yelled at her telling her how wrong she was. This was around 8:00PM and the neuropsychologist was at dinner with her family. Finally, I was able to escape from her, I… went to a new psychiatrist, went off all my medications, and have never been better. I don't even go to therapy anymore because of how well I'm doing. Dr. Deretic doesn't listen to her patients, she gives unsolicited advice, she's stubborn, disrespectful, and prescribes strong meds like they're nothing. As a result, I had two years of my adolescence taken from me.
