My son and I previously met with Dr. Teplitzky regarding concerns that his adenoids had regrown. During that appointment, I felt that my concerns as a parent were dismissed. I was told that regrowth was essentially unheard of, and each time I attempted to explain what I was observing with my child, I felt shut down rather than heard. After the appointment, I sent a few follow-up messages to express my continued concerns, but I did not receive a response from Dr. Teplitzky. Instead, a nurse responded in a way that felt dismissive, and my concerns were not addressed. Because I still felt something was wrong, I scheduled another appointment with a different physician within Nemours. Unfortunately, I encountered a similar experience where my concerns were not taken seriously. Ultimately, I brought my son to CHOP for another opinion. While the physician there initially also expressed that adenoid regrowth is uncommon, he listened carefully to my observations as a parent and adjusted his… treatment plan accordingly. During surgery, it was confirmed that the adenoids had indeed regrown. The reason I am sharing this experience is because the repeated dismissal of my concerns caused unnecessary delays and prolonged discomfort for my child. Parents know their children, and while physicians rely on medical training and textbooks, it is equally important to listen to the lived observations of caregivers. My hope is that this feedback encourages a more collaborative approach between providers and parents. When concerns are taken seriously and investigated rather than dismissed, it can prevent unnecessary suffering for children and families.
