He saved my life, what an amazing man.

WE'VE JUST HAD A 10TH ANNIVERSARY. SAM WAS DIAGNOSED WITH COLON CANCER IN 2004 AT 84. DR. ADKINS CONSULTED WITH US ON HOW HE WOULD DO THIS SURGERY, TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION SAM'S ACTIVE LIFESTYLE AS A 'SOUR DOUGH' IN THE WILDERNESS AREA OF ALASKA, NORTH OF THE ARCTIC CIRCLE. IT IS 10 YEARS LATER, SAM IS NOW 94. HE IS STILL HEALTHY AND ABLE TO CUT WOOD, HUNT, FISH AND HAS MINIMAL EFFECT FROM SURGERY AND RADIATION THERAPY.

My daughter has ulcerative colitis and it is severe enough that her pediatric gastroenterologist and a second gastroenterologist both felt she needed to have her colon removed. My husband and I took our daughter to see Dr. Atkins to see about having him perform the surgery. When the attendant called us back to the his exam room, we were told that Dr. Atkins would only let the patient and one other person in the exam room. My husband explained that our daughter was about to have very serious surgery and we both had questions for the doctor. The attendant agreed to take my daughter and myself back to the room and ask the doctor if my husband could join us. The doctor's office was right around the corner from the exam room and I could hear the attendant asking. Then I heard Dr. Atkins raise his voice and say that this was his office and it was not his procedure to allow more than one person in the room with the patient. He went on to say, "This just makes my job more difficult." and… refused to do it. I met the attendant at the door and let her know that we wanted to cancel our appointment. She gave me an apologetic look and escorted us out. My daughter was in tears and my husband and I were very upset as well. After this experience, I will never let Dr. Atkins touch my daughter. He obviously feels that his talent is to be used to do what is beneficial for himself, not to benefit his patients. He may have skill, but that is not the only thing that goes into good patient care. You have to treat the whole patient. This is where this talented man fails.
