Biographical Sketch – Dr. Terrence J. Griffin
This biographical sketch is meant to substitute for the Curriculum Vitae of Dr. Griffin which is much more extensive in details, and currently numbers over 39 pages in its entirety.
Education:
After graduating from Keith Academy in Lowell, Massachusetts, Dr. Griffin attended Boston College where he received a B.S. in Biology.  He then entered Tufts University School of Dental Medicine where he later completed his D.M.D.  After dental school, Dr. Griffin served for two years in the United States Navy where he completed a one-year fellowship in periodontics at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.  After the completion of his two-year tour of duty, he rejoined Tufts University as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Periodontology.  He received his Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Periodontology after two years in the program.
Academic Career:
Dr. Griffin joined the teaching faculty of Tufts University immediately after …graduation.  After teaching for many years on a part-time basis, he was named Chair of the Department of Periodontology in 1997.  Since 2000, he has also served as Director of Postdoctoral Periodontology.  He currently chairs a large department at Tufts with forty-two faculty members and twenty-five residents.  Dr. Griffin has academic appointments at two other universities.  He has served as a Professor at the Forsyth Institute of Dental Research in Boston, and as an external examiner and consultant at King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia and currently is a visiting professor at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” and Jiaotung University in Shanghai.
Honors and Awards:
Dr. Griffin is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. He has served on eight different committees and chaired activities for the American Academy of Periodontology.  For the past ten years, he has been Treasurer and a member of the Executive Board of the Massachusetts Periodontal Society.  In the past, he has also served as the President, President-Elect, and Secretary of the same organization.  He was Senior Ambassador of the Foundation for the American Academy of Periodontology. For the six years until 2009, he held the national office of Trustee of the American Academy of Periodontology.
