Dr. Thomas Bittker is a caring, intuitive psychiatrist who has mastered the art of diagnosis, brain chemistry, pharmacology, and behavioral outcomes. When I first came to his door, I was crippled by a sense of hopelessness and helplessness. I was desperate. He gently encouraged lifestyle changes, encouraged journal keeping, and urged me to see my life in the future. He also matched my symptoms with the right pharmacological solutions. I struggled for years with PTSD and anxiety. Dr. B was able to both figure out my biochemistry and provided a framework to get beyond some unhealthy childhood experiences. He is creative in his approach to treatment. He was initially quite demanding about the importance of leaving behind old bad habits. I am most grateful for his coaching and the changes I have made in my life. Also , he knows a lot about alternative medicine and helped direct me to a much healthier lifestyle. When I was about 20, they pushed me into his office on the top floor of the HMO. I wasn’t planning on living. I had no self-esteem, no ability to work because I couldn’t focus, I had serious depression. Two years and many appointments later, I was still there. I have suffered from depression my entire life. What Dr. Bittker did was make me believe that I was unusually smart and gifted, hypersensitive, and absolutely fine the way I was. Learn how to take care of yourself, love yourself, accept yourself. Although he is extremely busy juggling a private practice, court work and apparently a clinic, he made me feel cared for and from the first visit conveyed both compassion balanced with an incisive approach to my problem. Dr.B is an extraordinary physician and person. He is both appropriately tough and kind. I have worked with him for two years and am now graduating from treatment. His treatment of me had been transforming. He lives what he advocates. Apparently he is 75 years old. I don't know how he does it-- I suspect his lifestyle reflects his discipline--but he looks about 50. Only downside was wait times to see him initially. Well worth the wait.
