Dr. Thomas Zachary Emel, MD

I am a recent client of Dr. Thomas and if i'm being frank i've come to regret the choice to seek help. Last year I sought therapy because my life was unmanageable and I couldn't figure out how to fix that. She said I was showing signs of adhd and should pursue a diagnosis to receive adequate help. So I went to see Dr. Thomas. I told him my history of sleep insomnia, how I have always struggled with focusing, couldn't keep my house organized, had terrible brain fog and forgot important things often. He diagnosed me with adhd and decided to focus on my treatment resistant depression and anxiety. I impressed upon him that I desperately needed to have the ability to function as a responsible adult in order to survive but also let him know I would comply with whatever meds he prescribed. So I started the med he prescribed and at our last appointment reported that it had no impact on me. He upped the dosage. When I asked for something to help with concentration and I was told to wait and… continue trying the meds he prescribed. I am willing to do that but I need to know there is some end date in sight to this twelve year cycle of being prescribed something for depression or anxiety only for that med to never work no matter what it is. In this same appointment we discussed my inability to keep a schedule, to sleep on a consistent basis, my inability to clean or organize and how much of this was due to my worsening brain fog. He prescribed something for sleep that also has little impact. He asked why I could not keep a schedule and once agin I told him that my brain fog is almost constant. This adhd specialist told me to try and set more reminders and then laughed. I cannot manage my life after thirty years of trying. I am unable to have guests at my apartment because my place resembles a hoarder's nest. I am disabled and frequently forget appointments or forget to cancel appointments due to brain fog. Recently, I went to the ER because there was a lump forming under my chest. Despite noticing the lump forming last week I kept forgetting to call and set up an appointment with my primary care doctor to get it checked. My brain fog is that terrible and my sleep schedule is still inconsistent. I probably would have kept on forgetting had the lump not started causing me pain and shortness of breath. My adhd is so unmanaged that pain was the only thing to force me to remember that there was a lump under my chest. I finally went into the ER yesterday. It took me hours to get ready to leave because I have trouble with time blindness and time management. I find nothing about my situation to be humorous! I need help and instead I have been met with cruel disregard, a shocking lack of compassion and the knowledge that I will most likely never receive the care I need to thrive as a person. I am no longer willing to wait in medical purgatory. I am no longer allowing providers to remain insensitive.
