Dr. Thomas Richard Friberg, MD

Dr Friberg openly communicates and doesn’t dumb it down excessively as he assesses comprehension and understanding. Honest and frank in his communication. Have uncorrected 20/20 after two vitrectomies to repair torn retinas in each eye.

He and his fellow Dr. Trichonas performed laser reattachment of my retinal horseshoe tear and saved the sight in my left eye.

Excellent surgeon technically, knowledgable, appropriately engaging although somewhat dismissive of patient concerns. I would prefer a more interpersonally respectful physician, however, would not sacrifice diagnostic expertise and surgical skill in order to have that.

He is very caring and very knowledgeable. I particularly value his thoughtful approach to decision making about procedures (whether to operate or not) and how he evaluates the issues that impinge on the decision. He is also very friendly and spends time explaining my condition and how it is (or isn't) progressing. In my opinion, a great doctor!

In 1967, I started to go blind. I was in the Air Force at the time. By 1972, I was legally blind, and doctors told me that my vision would only get worse as the retina does not regenerate. Many tests and biopsies were performed upon me in order to determine what had gone wrong with my vision. Nothing was definitive. My vision did deteriorate, but slowly. I was trained at the Westhaven Connecticut Blind Rehabilitation Center. I was very mobile, but well, I was blind. I am saying was blind because after more than forty years with that condition, one day I met Dr. Friberg.To my surprise, Dr. Friberg told me that he could help me. That was on a Thursday. On the following Tuesday, he operated. His staff was very patient and accommodating with me. Dr. Friberg has a great sense of humor. When I asked him how many of these surgeries he'd done, he told me I was his first and that he'd learned this procedure on the web. This was very very funny! When I asked again, he told me… that he'd done thousands. This makes me think there are thousands of people running around today who were blind but can now see. Dr. Friberg calls himself a cog in the wheel. He attributes his work to God. His staff all admire him too and treat him with great respect.When the bandages came off, my Frankenstein moment, the day after the surgery, I could see the big E on the eye chart. My wife was there and she was shocked and joyful. She smiled at me like Barack Obama. I religiously followed the instructions I was given with regard to medicines and ointments. Those substances tapered off as my vision CONTINUED to improve. Shortly thereafter, I was given a pair of nice glasses and today today my vision is better than20/40. I have a driver's license! I used to get ferried around by the Seeing Hand Association and now I drive for them! It is said we come together like clumps of straw upon the ocean mingle briefly and then get swept away again, upon the swells perhaps catching a final glimpse or two as we rise and fall through life. This particular clump of straw is very glad to have met Dr. Friberg.

Dr. Friberg was recommended to me by one of the other very experienced doctors of the UPMC Eye and Ear Institute. I feel very confident that my eye condition is in good hands, now, for about 2 1/2 yrs. On a bad day, his manner can be somewhat abrupt and condescending, but, on a good day, his manner is quite satisfactory, and he can be rather sociable. However, I am seeing him for his knowledge and experience, not his manner, so, I can tolerate the downside.
