Dr. Thomas K Takayama, MD

This man saved my life twice, cleaned out my prostate, and pulled kidney stones several times. The latest equipment including a DaVinci, and lasers. The saying is "When you find a good physician, hold onto him/her". The corollary to that is make sure they are younger than you. I live in Olympia but am more than willing to drive over an hour for an appointment.

My psa was high so I visited. Dr T used time asking a number of irrelevant personal questions totally unrelated to my health background, recorded several things erroneously in the chart notes, failed to answer basic important questions about recommended test, prescribed unnecessary meds and unnecessary as well as obsolete invasive tests. Exam felt like a violation, office appeared unsanitary (urine from previous patient in cup), worst blood draw ever from staff based on bruising and general office staff chaos when scheduling. Overall not a good experience or treatment—found better options.

I had multiple problems: urgency issues; interrupted urine flow; sky high PSA with enlarged prostate, but no noticeable lumps. A biopsy showed cancer, so we discussed various options. Dr Takayama gave me web links to sites that gave more information on my condition, and pros and cons of the options we had discussed. Dr Takayama was generous with his time, and when I had a setback, cleared his schedule to care for me immediately. As the course of treatment we agreed on included radiation therapy, he offered several options as to treatment location. I agreed with his assessment that the facility that was a bit further from home was better equipped to care for me. I am now in remission, and only occasionally think of urinary functions, and then it's "Wow, that was nice to sit through an entire movie without having to head for the restroom; or to take a long road trip without having to stop frequently. I was at a friends house, and he said that Dr Takayama had treated him for prostate… cancer a decade before, and that he (my friend) was symptom free. He also felt Dr T was an outstanding physician.

Gives misleading statements to sell you on robotic surgery.

Pushed hard for robotic surgery and lied about needing surgery immediately or cancer would spread quickly.

Dr takayama was friendly and very caring. I would recommend this Doctor to others.
