Dr. Thomas J Wells, MD

Mrs. Abernathy is a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner, with over 23 years of nursing experience. Her certification is through the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She began her nursing career in 1987 when she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Western Carolina University. As a Registered Nurse she found she enjoyed working with patients at the bedside in the emergency department and coronary care unit. She graduated from the University of South Carolina, Columbia with a Masters of Nursing Science as a Family Nurse Practitioner. She completed a one year rural health residency sponsored by the Department of Rural Health of North Carolina.

As a Family Nurse Practitioner with 14 years experience, she found she really does enjoy the spectrum of care found in family practice. She worked as Family Nurse Practitioner in the foothills of North Carolina until 2003. Drawn by the excitement of the last frontier, she and her husband, Gary, moved to Bethel, Alaska …where she worked training Health Aides and eventually going to work in the Family Practice clinic for three years.

Leaving Bethel in 2006 she then worked one year for the Lung and Sleep Clinic of Alaska. She learned to care for patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea. She joined PMHC in October of 2008, transferring from the Employee Health Department.

Mrs. Abernathy is an award winning gardener and has completed the Alaska Master Gardner Program. Other hobbies include reading, fishing and walking her dogs.
