Dr. Timothy John Shanahan, DO

My dad had been a patient of Dr Shanahan for more than 10 years, but we recently found out that the doctor neglected serious issues that should have been addressed months earlier. Several weeks ago, when my dad began having concerning symptoms, he tried scheduling an appointment, and had to wait weeks to see Dr Shanahan. After evaluating my dad, Dr Shanahan sent him home, saying he’d see him again in 3 months. At that time, we didn’t know my dad should have immediately been sent to an emergency room. Days after his appointment, my dad was rushed to the hospital, his lung was dangerously filled with fluid, and he required heart surgery that should have been performed more than a year ago. When entering the emergency room, my dad had been prescribed blood thinner medication that was poorly monitored by medical staff, and his blood reached levels so thin, it was too risky to drain his lung or perform surgery. After being under the care of cardiologists and a pulmonary team for 7 days… at UMMC Baltimore they were able to get fluid drained from his lung. A week later UMMC Baltimore surgeons performed heart surgery. The cardiology team said that ANY cardiologist should have ordered minimally invasive heart surgery at least one year earlier when my dad was in better overall health and at much lower risk. My father nearly died. IMO, it was absolutely irresponsible for Dr Shanahan to not have taken my dad’s medical issues more seriously and proactively treated his known heart condition.
