I write this review after a recent extremely brief office visit with Dr. Dudley.
To say that I was shocked and stunned by the incredible change in Dr. Dudley's personality is a great understatement. The primary reason for visiting was to get a renewal of my Adderall prescription, a controlled substance that he has refilled for many years with no questions whatsoever -- none! Before that, the now-retired Dr. Duggan did the same thing. Until this most recent visit, there was never any question that my need for my medication was genuine.
When Dr. Dudley came into the visiting room, he was gruff, impatient and blatantly uncaring -- as though something traumatic may have recently occurred to him. He was a completely different person, someone, quite frankly, who should NOT be seeing patients.
I was told during a previous phone call that Dr. Dudley was vacationing in Florida, thus having to postpone my follow-up visit. I normally can get a refill from a nurse practitioner, but Dr. Dudley's… NP suddenly told me, for the first time, that my last refill was completed "as a courtesy" and would never be done again unless filled by Dr. Dudley.
I used as a conversation opener a standard question. He curtly responded, "I didn't go to Florida!" Wow. So I simply made the standard request for my Adderall prescription.
In response to my standard request, Dr. Dudley looked at me with the angriest eyes I am sure I have ever experienced with a medical professional, and told me he was refusing to ever prescribe Adderall to me again -- as though I was somehow a criminal simply because I was requesting a medication I had used for adult ADD, pain in my back, to control shakes in my hands, among other things, was suddenly moot.
He told me, for the first time EVER, that he considered Adderall to be a "designer drug" which, if anyone who has done any research on the medication, is clearly not the case. Is it often abused, particularly college students, who attempt to use it for study and other purposes? Absolutely. But that is the case with many other medications, whether they be amphetamine-based, benzo-based or opiate-based prescriptions. I understand that Adderall is considered controversial by some segments of the medical profession, but I have taken it since 1999, and have yet in all that time to have suffered any ill effects -- only positive ones.
What truly surprised me most, however, was his complete lack of care or concern for my well-being as his, and your, longtime patient. Did he wish to discuss alternative therapies? No! He didn't even broach the subject with me. This would seem to be THE most basic tenet of decent medical care. I reiterated to him, as I had done a few times before, that my neurologist specifically had recommended that I continue my Adderall refills. "Then get HER to do it!" he snapped at me.
The brief visit concluded with a very sharply conveyed concluding query: "Well, are we done here?", to which I, still in shock, sheepishly replied, "I guess so." He opened the door, stormed out, and slammed it behind him.
I was so stunned by the experience that it's taken me a few weeks to absorb and process the experience. What on earth is happening to Dr. Dudley, and also, your office? People like Morgan Martin, Dudley's assistants Sarah and, in particular, Ashley, have become impersonal people, communicating in very condescending fashion, as though we don't deserve their valuable time. And I have never, EVER been anything but kind and considerate to each one of them.
Is Dr. Dudley suffering from some kind of physical or mental condition himself? What is happening at Indiana Internal Medicine Consultants?
I am currently awaiting a reply from the practice's executive administrator, at which point I will file an update. But for now, I strongly recommend against seeing Dr. Todd Dudley, for any reason.
