I've suffered with posterior vitreous detachment in my left eye for over 2 years which created severely disruptive floaters. A reassuring story for anyone that has the misfortune to develop a torn retina. I was actually traveling in India and during the trip, I found that I had something in my eye that was not coming out and blocked my vision over a portion of the eye. No pain or discomfort. When I got back to Virginia, I decided that I should have it looked at and call a local optometrist that was in Ballston Mall. He had me come right in on a Saturday and after a quick exam, excused himself to make a call. He came back in and told me that I had an appointment with Dr. Melki for 6 pm on the same Saturday and not to eat since surgery might be imminent. Dr. Melki opened his office that day to see me and had me in surgery the next morning to correct a major torn retina. That was over ten years ago, and I just recently had a clean checkup with him that showed no problems from the torn retina. It was a surreal experience, but the doctor and his staff made it as easy as possible.

In 2002, I had retinal tears in both eyes, First in the left eye then the right. Ultimately, he had to surgically implant a scleral buckle in my left eye. I've had no issues since then and with contacts my vision is 20/25. I cannot express my gratitude enough for what he did. When I first went to his office in 2002, he immediately took me in and took care of the retinal tears. Ever since, when I've gone for checkups I've never resented the wait, because I know that he has probably had an emergency (including when I saw him today in May 2019).

After two laser surgeries to repair a torn retina, I suffered a bleed in the eye. In the space of about 30 minutes to an hour, the vision in my right eye was like looking through a glass of dirty water. So frightening. Dr. Melki's excellent staff, especially Kabas who understood how frightened I was and got my vitrectomy surgery scheduled for the next day. I understand now that the bleed was not due to a detached retina, and in a sense was not an absolute emergency. At the time however, I was just terrified. Thank you for fixing my eye. Seven hours after being sent to Dr. Melki by my ophthalmologist at 10:00am I was on an operating table having my retina reattached. Dr. Melki and his staff worked to secure a place for my emergency surgery close to home and I felt extremely well taken care of from start to finish. Six months later my vision has improved to the point that I do not need glasses for reading as before. I have been going to Dr. Melki for 20 years. While in California for vacation three and a half years ago, I developed a detached retina. I called his office and was immediately put through to him. He scheduled surgery for the day after we returned to Maryland. By that time the only vision in the affected eye was a thin crescent of light at the top of what should have been my circle of vision. Thanks to Dr. Melki's skillful care, the repair was successful, and full vision in the eye was restored. I was advised that cataracts would develop more quickly after such surgery. and a year later Dr. Melki advised me to consider doing so. He also said "I know the good ones (the good cataract surgeons)." Truer words were never spoken because the doctor to whom Dr. Melki referred me did such excellent work that for the first time in my life I have a driver's license that does not require me to wear corrective lenses. Dr. Melki always takes time to explain the changes in my vision… that he perceives. I have always found him to be not only skilled but a very caring person. I would recommend him without reservation.

I was referred to Dr. Melki after I developed a mysterious infection in my left eye after cataract surgery. Once it became clear that this was a serious condition and I could use my eyesight in that eye, Dr. Melki wasted no time in arranging emergency surgery. He met me late on a Friday afternoon at the hospital and arranged for an operating room to be made available quickly despite the fact that this was unscheduled surgery and the hospital's operating rooms were already booked. The surgery to remove the infected vitreous at the back of my eyeball was totally successful and when the patch was removed I was relieved that my eyesight was finally clear. I am now 20-20 in that eye and no longer need correction for distance or reading. Dr. Melki followed up with me over that weekend and we've had 3 followup visits to make sure everything was good, which it is. I cannot be more grateful to Dr. Melki and his staff for getting me through this unexpected crisis and letting me… continue my work and play with perfect vision.

I highly recommend Dr. Toufic Melki, as he is an excellent ophthalmologist and retina specialist. In May 2014, I was having partially blocked vision in my right eye. My optometrist cited Dr. Melki as the retina expert in the DC area. Given the urgency, Dr. Melki agreed to see me right away, even though I did not have an appointment. He explained that I had a detached retina and that surgery was needed right away to save my vision in the right eye. He rearranged his busy schedule in order to perform surgery that afternoon. The next day, a Saturday, he called me at home to remove the eyepatch while I was on the phone with him so he could explain everything he did during surgery, as well as how to administer the multiple eyedrops needed for recovery. There were multiple follow-ups over the next few days, weeks and months and my eyesight improved to 20/25 vision, better than before the surgery. Fast forward to 2017, and I had a similar experience with my left eye. After experiencing… similar blocked vision, I called Dr. Melki‘s office and he agreed to see me that same day. Similarly, he performed surgery that afternoon and recovery went well. Because of the gas bubble used during surgery, he warned me that I would probably need cataract surgery sometime this year. Sure enough, a cataract had formed in the left eye and I had surgery in June by a cataract surgeon in the area. During that recovery, I noticed my vision was actually getting worse and I was concerned that the cataract surgery had failed. I decided to see Dr. Melki again, as I felt he could give me a second opinion of the cataract surgery, as well as make sure the retina was OK. Unfortunately, because of all of the trauma to my left eye in a short period of time, a macular pucker had formed in the center of my retina, distorting my vision. He explained this condition in detail, and made a recommendation for another surgery to remove the thin cellular layer that had formed. That surgery was also a success and four months later, my optometrist just told me I have 20/20 vision in that eye. Not only did Dr. Melki save the vision in both of my eyes, my overall eyesight is much better than it was four years ago. I really don’t even need glasses now, except to read. Not only is he a very good retina specialist and surgeon, but he is very personable and easy to talk to and understand. Because I have seen him so much over the past four years, when I have a follow-up appointment, it’s like visiting a friend. I would also like to highlight his very professional, and hard-working staff. They are always friendly and responsive to the patient’s needs. The office sees a lot of patients every day, and the staff tries to keep the flow of patients moving quickly and efficiently. Sometimes this is not an easy task when some patients need more time with the doctor or for treatment than originally allotted.
