Dr. Vu Quang Phan, MD

UNCARING & NEGLIGENT I understand that many oncologists' primary concern is to give immediate attention to the cancer patients who they CAN save, and while that is commendable, if they are going to do so at the expense and disregard of those who are elderly and terminal, they really need to check their ego at the door. Regardless of the time a person has to live, they ALL deserve the SAME quality of life, respect and dignity. My mom is in Los Alamitos MediKill Center despite knowledge throughout the local community that the facility is horrible, because it was an emergency to get her in for cancer testing and because Dr. Phan assured the family that she would be treated by the physicians who the family trusted there. NOT ONLY WAS THAT INACCURATE, BUT WE WERE JUST ADVISED THAT ONE OF THE TESTS CANNOT EVEN BE DONE THERE. When she was first admitted, it seemed like things had changed. But they have not. The first room was nice, but the nurse got irritated every time she needed… something, probably because the hospital overloads their nurses. Unfortunately, it’s the patient who suffers. In addition, they made her suffer a 20-hour period of time with no IV, no food, and no water for a test that they did not get around to doing for a full day later. AT THIS TIME, DR. PHAN, DR. CHUNG, AND DR. CHEN WERE NOT AT ALL INVOLVED OR CONCERNED WITH THE FACT THAT SOMEONE SHOULD HAVE REMOVED THE NPO ORDER BEFORE THEY WEAKENED HER EVEN MORE THAN SHE WAS. When Dr. Phan tried to convince her to have a procedure done with the ONE DOCTOR WE ASKED NOT TO WORK WITH, he told her if she didn't, she might have to WAIT SIX MONTHS for the test?????!!!!!!! This behavior is unacceptable and unethical. Of course, we complained about the irresponsible treatment, and then she got moved. Now she has a room with chipped paint, no phone, and the explanation is that the only way to have a phone in the room is to have to take one from another room. The cleanliness and condition of the room is medieval. It’s very clear that if people are elderly and in serious condition, the assumption is they will not notice if the room is awful, or no one responds to a request. The ONLY saving grace is a very kind nurse, named Lucas, who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to do what he can to fix this medieval facility’s practices, to try to get those responsible to communicate with family, and try to get her the care she needs. But it is very clear that Los Al MediKill Center overloads their nurses--and THE DOCTORS AND PEOPLE IN CHARGE DON'T RESPECT OR EVEN RESPOND TO THE RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE NURSES. At least we can be grateful for nurse Lucas being so conscientious—no credit due to this awful facility. NONE OF THE DOCTORS have communicated with any family member when anything major came up--like the need for a blood transfusion. She is 87, quite ill, and does not remember the things they tell her sometimes. THE DOCTORS' PRACTICE IS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF PATIENT WEAKNESS TO DO THE MINIMUM, WITH NO ATTENTION OR EXPLANATION FOR PATIENTS SUFFERING AS A RESULT OF INEFFICIENT PLANNING AND ZERO COMMUNICATION. The doctors basically function at the same caliber of carelessness and lack of communication as the facility and administration, whose values are the polar opposite of health and wellness, which is probably why they have their admitting privileges here. If not, for the critical nature of getting her in for testing as quickly as possible, we would have never admitted her here. MY ONLY HOPE ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS IS THAT THEY DON'T NEGLECT HER OR RETALIATE TO COMPLAINTS TO THE POINT OF HER SUFFERING AS A RESULT. No one should be made to feel how my mother feels right now, ESPECIALLY when they are ill.

I was very fortunate to be referred to Dr. Phan through my breast surgeon. I have had treatment for my breast cancer and had a lack luster relationship with my oncologist. I was seeking a physician that would listen to my concerns and be a true partner in my care. Dr. Phan exceeded my expectations. He spent more than 1 hour with me and proceeded to go over every biopsy and test that had been taken in a year. His smile is infectious and you can see his enthusiasm for your treatment plan. He said I could call with a question any time and he would return my call- and he truly will. The office staff is friendly and efficient. I worked via email until my appointment. I am completely confident that this office will be my partner in health care for a long time. As a daughter of s physician, I know the dedication that most doctors have. I am confident that if you are able to become one of his patients, you will see that drive and work ethic that many doctors are lacking in this… modern era post private insurance and HMO. Please give Dr. Phan a chance to see you as a patient. It can be so discouraging to find doctors that are not willing to listen to you. This doctor is the complete opposite, and you will be surprised.

My dad was being treated by another oncologist. We went to Dr. Phan for a second opinion. He was insightful. Very kind and compassionate. He really took the time to explain to my dad and the rest of the family what was going on. This kind of service is rare nowadays. When we had additional questions, we called him. To our surprise, he returned the phone call immediately. Very nice doctor! Highly recommended.

I finally found the doctor for me . Dr. Phan is very knowledgeable and compassionate. He's willing to spend the time needed to with my family and I to discuss treatment plans. I highly recommend this office.

Dr. Phan is an excellent physician. He is truly very caring to each patient with the time he gives patients and it seems quality to his patients is worth more than quantity of patients. Dr. Phan is to be commended.

Best Hematologist my father had.

This is the best doctor I have been to. His office is modern and cozy. His staff are friendly and competent. He has an infectious smile that makes you feel better for just being in the office. Best of all, he takes his time with me. The first visit, he spent over an hour with me. For follow up visits, he spents up to 30 minutes each time. I never once felt rushed. Highly recommended. This man is well-trained. He graduated from City of Hope Cancer program.
