Dr. Wayne David Piers, DO

I have had orthopedic surgeries on my neck, my low back, my left hip twice in 8 days and my right knee replacement. Dr. Piers did the knee surgery. It was the only surgery that did not have some crazy post operative complication. To be fair to the doctor who did the lie back surgery, the complication was not of his doing. The neck and hip surgeries ( both hip operations has doctor caused complications) were due to surgeon error. But under Dr. Piers’ care everything was perfect. No complications - no failure to take care of pain issues - it was a wonderful experience to have a physician who listened and cared. If I ever need another orthopedic procedure, he’s the one I want!

Excellent relationship with Dr. Piers and his staff. Very compassionate and thorough before and after hip replacement surgery. Procedure was more complex due to MRI that did not show extent of damage, but Dr. Piers didn't skip a beat. Now 6 months post surgery - I am pain free and able to do activities that have been out of reach for 10 years. Wonderful doctor.

Dr. Piers did hip “replacement” surgery on me. Recovery was much slower than expected due to muscle pain and aches that often prevented an appropriate ongoing recovery exercise routine. A little past a year from the operation, an unrelated CAT-Scan showed that a screw from the hip operation had inappropriately penetrated my ilium (hip bone) and protruded into my psoas muscle on the side of the surgery. The psoas muscles are the major muscles that connect the lower spinal area to each femur. I arranged a consult with Dr. Piers and my wife and I. Dr. Piers was very defensive from the beginning of our meeting. He discouraged me from having the screw removed by telling me that it would require a total redo of the operation that he recommended not be undertaken without any specific reason as to why. He also tried to assure me that the operation was totally appropriately done and that the screw into my psoas muscle would not be causing any of my muscle pain in my butt area and hip… ache that I was experiencing. Upon later researching the psoas muscles, I quickly found that any aggravation of either of the muscles would result in exactly the pain and aching that I was and am still experiencing. I also found that prosthesis screws penetrating my ilium bone, is not indicative of a proper surgery. As Dr. Piers is a Clinical Professor at the University of New England, I find it extremely hard to believe that he did not understand the psoas muscle’s location and how any aggravation of which would cause exactly my ongoing pain and aches. Quite frankly, my discussion with Dr. Piers appeared to be nothing less than a cover up attempt of his surgical mistake.

Dr. Piers is knowledgeable, but moody in his interactions with patients. One time he is fully engaged and explains questions well. Another time, he is disengaged and brusque in answering questions and hearing the concerns of family.
