Diagnosed with stage four in operable malignant cancer, I was sent to hospice not expected to live. First thing Hospice doctor did was put me on the Fentanyl patch for pain. I became violently ill. Lost 55 lbs in less then two weeks. He never once came to check on me. I kept telling the staff and nurses it was the patch that was making me ill. After waiting for him for three days, I finally took it off myself and refused any more of it. When he finally came to see me and commented on my weight loss, I told him it was thanks to the fentanyl. His reply was was, yea I heard some strange stories about that.I would be dead if I had not had the Faith to remove the patch and refuse it. He told me he felt I had been mis-diagnosed- then denied saying it. Sad part is he was right - thank God I listened to my intuition, believed in myself and my Faith and was strong minded enough to act. I understand why others thought I was terminal however, this is the one dr that should have followed up as he… even went out of his way to tell the house manager he was going to personally follow my case. There are better ways to die then on pain meds. If I’m ever in a situation like this again I will not take the pain meds I will die with a smile on my face, medical marijuana. It’s so sad, they perscribed synthetic marijuana, extremely expensive, to help my appetite. Fentanyl should not be allowed in America. I am still dealing with the damage it did to me. Hospice patients need to be listened to, and they need strong advocates that are very informed as to what is going on. Hospice patients may be dying, but they deserve to be heard, they have rights.
