Dr. Joseph John Kavolus, MD, MSCR II

I had a full anterior hip replacement performed by Dr. Joseph Kavolus at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in January 2026. I rate this experience as excellent. Five Stars. Dr Kavolus fixed my troublesome knee. He said he’d see if he could do it with only a partial replacement, and he did! It solved a myriad of odd aches and pains that had be bothering me for years. Recovery went very well, exceeding expectations.

I suffered increasingly sharp left hip pain and lacked range of motion for over a decade due to an injury. One month out from surgery and my quality of life has drastically improved. The modern "anterior"procedure was performed. I re-gained range of motion that was gone years ago and that deep, sharp agonizing pain is gone. Dr. Kavolus has given me back my quality of life as my pain was impeding me all day everyday, and now I am pain free and walk without a limp. Thank You Dr. Kavolus Matthew Kopcinski

Dr Kavolus did a THR on me in October 2023. Post surgery he was rude, condescending and untruthful in my follow up appointments and emails. He was dismissive of my significant pain post surgery. I was later Dx by a another highly reputable surgeon with a torn abductor tendon caused my the THP surgery. 80% of my tendon was torn off of the trochanter bone. MRI's prior to the THR showed no damage to any muscles or tendons in my hip. The damage done by Dr Kovalus required opioid pain medications, a 2nd hip surgery and another 6 month recovery. Highly recommend going to any surgeon other than Dr. Kovalus. He's great if all goes well. God help you if there are adverse outcomes. He became angry and defensive with me.

I had put off my knee replacement (both need done) for a decade because of the pain I expected and the severity of it all. I finally made the decision and had my right knee replacement in February 2025. The time and thoughtful planning he and his staff put into the pre and post op processes set me up for success, less risk of infection, minimal swelling and pain management. I don’t say this lightly- they were all amazing! Dr. Kavolus knows his business and does it with compassion, patience and skill. His office staff and the surgical facility staff (Lighthouse Surgical suites) couldn’t have done anything different to improve my experience unless I could cuddle a puppy while waiting for the surgery!! I will be having my left knee done in April and can honestly say I am looking forward to it! Cannot be more grateful for Dr. Kavolus and his amazing staff!

A healthy left hip as an active marathoner & martial artist is kinda useful. Dr. Kavolus gave me confidence that he could get me back on the roads. Mentioned common restriction is distance running. Knowing that's my thing he knew it was super important that legs came out the same length they went in. Promised me 7 weeks and I'll be back to training. Week 5 follow-up and ON TARGET. Highly recommend his services.

Dr. Kavolus is a superb surgeon and a caring and skillful doctor. I am 71 and needed both hips replaced. I could not be happier with my experience with Dr. Kavolus throughout. From the first time I met with him, I had full confidence in his assessment and advice, and also that of his PA Alexis Arnold. They both listen carefully and take time to explain thoroughly and answer all questions. They gave specific helpful advice each step of the way. The surgeries were done 2 months apart, both at Newton Wellesley Hospital. The experience for each, through scheduling, pre-op appointments, surgery and recovery, was flawless. For both hips, the first time I walked, an hour after surgery, my hip felt stable and I had very little pain. Before the end of the 2 weeks of home PT, I was driving and no longer using a cane. With the following weeks of PT, strength and flexibility increased steadily. It has now been 5 months since the first hip and 3 months since the second. My hips both are strong and… can do everything I want to do! I am very grateful to Dr. Kavolus and recommend him wholeheartedly.

I had my knee replaced 4 1/2 weeks ago. I was told by people that I know who have had their knee replaced that I would be in extreme pain, stairs would be impossible and that I would need a walker for awhile and then progress to a cane. Because I was so anxious prior to surgery, I had many questions. All my questions on Patient Gateway were answered that day. I never experienced extreme pain, used a walker for a couple of days and haven't used a cane for the last 2 weeks. I would recommend without reservation Dr. Kavolus as well as his PA, Alexis Arnold. I had my follow up visit with Dr. Kavolus 2 days ago. He was wonderful! Again, he is an excellent surgeon as well as a friendly, approachable doctor.

I am so happy and thankful for finding Dr. Kavolus. He is one of the BEST, most professional Orthopedic Surgeons you can comfortably trust as you go through the pain and anxiety you are experiencing before/during/after the trauma of your surgery. I’m a 41yr old former runner who ran 6 marathons and developed severe Osteoarthritis in both hips. Dr. Kavolus replaced my right hip this past February at his Lighthouse Surgical site in New Hampshire and my left hip last month at Newton Wellesley Hospital. I’m now experiencing the least pain I’ve felt in years and my Alignment is better than I can ever remember- Thanks to Dr. Kavolus‘s Team at Newton Wellesley Hospital and at his Lighthouse site!
