Dr. Gerald B Appel has the following 2 specialties
A nephrologist is a physician who is specially trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the kidneys or renal system.
A nephrologist will determine through urine analysis, blood test, X-ray, sonogram, or kidney biopsy how well the kidneys are functioning and will then prescribe a special diet and exercise program, medication or dialysis - a process by which a machine filters the blood when the kidney is no longer capable of doing so.
- Internal Medicine
An internist is a physician who focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that affect the adult population—both acute and chronic.
These doctors are often who adults see as their primary physicians because they treat a broad range of illnesses that do not require surgical or specialist interventions. They also work to help a patient maintain optimal health in order to prevent the onset of disease.
In addition to treating the common cold and flu, internists also treat chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease.
- Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
- Kidney Disease (Glomerulonephritis)
- Peritoneal Dialysis
- Kidney Biopsy
- Nephrotic Syndrome
- Chronic Renal Disease
- End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
- Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

dr. appel needs to retire ... he is more interested in his lectures and traveling all over the world than he is with his patients. he is always in a rush, has no bedside manner and does not spend time explaining your condition or giving possible alternatives...he is not up on the latest findings in his field nor offering this kind of information pertaining to your condition nor does he care. always has an intern in with him and tries to impress that person rather than focus on the patient at hand and their needs. he is more impressed with the celebrities that he has as patients than the ordinary patient who sees him. he is not hands on, never gives encouragement and is never positive.. much too clinical never explains anything ..just gives you the bottom line.... when you can not get through to his office for over 3 weeks solid, there is something radically wrong with his practice. it is unethical... for patients to be calling and not getting through! finally, another office from another building takes your call and your message and says someone will get back to you and no one ever does! this is pure neglect and disrespect to his patients... you can not run a practice in this manner!. medication refills are often wrong and have to be requested more than once....that is another whole story! It is very discouraging to think you are in good hands and then to have these experiences, he is simply resting on his laurels! he should take note that he is not actively involved with his patients but rather just goes through the routine motions of a routine exam. .with no follow up expressed to see for another appointment.
