Dr. James L. Smith, Jr. is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and fellowship-trained spine surgeon in practice since 1989. He sees patients at the Northwest Austin and Central Austin offices of Texas Orthopedics. Dr. Smith attended the University of Texas in Austin for his undergraduate education. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1983. Dr. Smith completed his orthopedic residency training at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and performed his fellowship training in spine surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and the University of British Columbia. In addition to his board certification for orthopedic surgery, Dr. Smith is certified by the American Board of Spine Surgery. He is a member of the North American Spine Society and a past president of the Texas Spine Society.

Best Ortho doc in Austin. I had a fusion almost 20 years ago with Dr. Smith and have had a few issues since the. With my spine. I saw 5 docs prior to selecting Smith with a final question of, you need my surgery.. who does it? 3 of the 5 said Dr. Smith. He is the absolute best... period.

The Best experience. I was in a lot of pain and Dr. Smith and staff put me ease and provided clear information about my condition and options available to me.i asked so many questions and he answered each patiently even when I asked several times. I trust Dr Smith.

Dr. Smith was knowledgeable, had a friendly staff, had a great sense of humor and he was the real deal! Dr Smith was amazing!

Dr. Smith takes the time to figure out what exactly is wrong. Surgery is a last resort for him, which I appreciate very much. He’s very thorough and has a great sense of humor! I would highly recommend him if you’re having any issues with your back.

Dr. Smith not only makes direct eye contact in an empathic way, but he listens carefully in a cheerful caring manner. In addition, he is just unbelievably positive and knowledgeable in his approach to pinpoint and suggest a possible solution. His credentials speak for themselves. He has helped me in the past and I once again seek his orthopedic expertise with a painful problem in my spine. He is amazing and leaves one with a lightness and hopefulness.

Dr. Smith took his time with me allowing me to explain my problems and asked follow up questions. It did not feel like he was rushing to his next appt like so many other providers. I appreciated the time and attention he gave me and would absolutely recommend him to others. Note - my treatment is ongoing and cannot yet speak to his effectiveness, but I do feel confident he’ll resolve my issues.

I’ve seen Dr. Smith for two different issues. The first resulted in surgery on my back and the second was a minor issue. Both times, Dr. Smith was great in explaining the problems and the best action to take to address the problem. He takes the time for you and makes you feel like you’re his only patient. I have and will continue to recommend Dr. Smith to anybody that asks.
