Dr. James Edward Mathis, MD

Five weeks ago, I had a knee replacement. Dr. Mathis did a perfect job.i have about 95% useage out of my knee , mostly pain free. He anticipated my every medication, and have had no problems. Good face to face demeanor. I will certainly use him again when my other knee goes bad.

This doctor was friendly and ordered an ex-ray which I think was the right thing to do because of the papers I filled out. He was friendly and no nonsense which I liked. The bad news he wants to replace my hip but gave me the option to try other things before surgery. I will see him again. The office staff were friendly and do a good job.

Kind.... compassionate. He was spot on with the diagnosis... I thought it was my hip that was causing the pain when in fact it was my back. He took the time to ask questons and performed a very thorough exam. Excellent care

I have had two knee replacements with Dr. Mathis. He is a very kind and considerate doctor and both knee replacements have been great. The office staff was not as good, but I was looking for doctor with great skills.

I was sent to see Dr. Mathis to address issues I continue to have with my left hip/leg. He seemed nice enough upon meeting him, but he NEVER once physically examined me. He said it was likely coming from my lower back. My response was that I had fairly recently had an MRI done of my lower back, which did not show any abnormalities whatsoever. He obviously dismissed this & ordered an MRI of my lower back. I had the MRI done, then went back to his office for the results. The MRI showed NOTHING WRONG with my lower back. I had to bite my tongue to prevent myself from saying, "I told you so!" Instead of ordering an MRI of my hip, he sent me to a doctor that practices somewhat alternative medicine (translation: no treatment he performs is covered by insurance). I refused to go back to Mathis b/c he was very unsympathetic to my problem & showed no real interest in helping me to actually discover what exactly is wrong with me (I still don't know). I'm still completely baffled that an ortho doc… can see patients and fail to ever physically examine them. I have seen other ortho surgeons in the past & EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM examined me! (My mom had the same experience. The man even went so far as to recommend surgery (after viewing an MRI), but never once touched her. To sum up, Mathis is an unsympathetic doc who doesn't even attempt to connect w/ his patients & shows little interest in working to diagnose & treat the patient's injury or disease.

Dr Mathis was a great doctor. Diag. was on the dot and followup after 1 year is still stellar. Have dealt with 1 other doc in the office that service was only medium compared to Dr. Mathis.

Dr. Mathis has successfully removed bone spurs on my wife's shoulder, repaired torn cartilage in one of her knees, and performed carpal tunnel surgery on her wrist. All these procedures went without a hitch, and she has made a full recovery. Last week, Dr. Mathis operated on my shoulder for a torn rotator cuff and although it hurts like a SOB, I am confident it's on the mend.The man's a surgeon, fer Chrissake, not a midwife. If you judge a surgeon's competence by how gently he holds your hand at the bedside, and tenderly says "There, there.", go elsewhere...maybe City of Hope. If you want your injury repaired like Nolan Ryan would, and the anesthesiologists, nurses, and attendings to be Mayo Clinic caliber professionals, not Tomball Regional knuckle-draggers, this is the man to see.
