Dr. Joshua Malo, MD

I met Dr. Malo and he treated me while I was a patient at UMC for an unrelated issue and began having difficulties with my asthma. I will begin by saying that Dr. Malo is a very nice man. He spent a lot of time with me in the hospital each time he saw me and in the office for my follow-up appointment.However, giving that UMC is highly ranked as a pulminary specialty hospital, I was greatly disappointed in his actual care. He is a fellow so he still requires oversight but the most frustrating thing is that he would ask questions and then didn't seem to actually listen. I've had asthma for 40 years and it has been under control for the vast majority of that time. I know my asthma very well and take excellent care of myself and my health. For my age, I am in superior health, even with asthma. Yet, almost everything I told Dr. Malo was met with skepticism. When I told him my average peak flows, he raised his eyebrow and said, "that's unusually high" as though I was making it up. … He never once had me blow into any machine to check my lung functions, not even a peak flow meter. How is he going to know what's going on if he doesn't run some checks? He ordered nebulizers and when I told him they weren't working, he simply increased the frequency instead of trying to figure out why they weren't working. The doctor who was supervising my care for my other issue overrode Dr. Malo on several occasions even though he isn't an asthma doctor because he knows me well enough to know when I tell him something wasn't right that it needs to be fixed. When I told Dr. Malo something wasn't right, it went in one ear and out the other. When I go to a doctor, I expect them to listen to me and Dr. Malo didn't.Overall, I think Dr. Malo's technical training is probably very good. However, the fact he didn't run even very basic tests on me and the fact that he doesn't listen to me greatly takes away from how I view him as a doctor.Being that it's UMC, the appointments are booked out quite a bit and there was a minor (about 15 minute) wait.
