Dr. Laurance Dean Smith, MD

I was refereed to Dr. Smith by a member of LMG's clinical staff due to findings in my MRI report. He asked me many questions about my medical history, family history and my mental health. We talked for a while about the findings in my MRI report and about everything else needed for him to make a diagnosis. I see an Endocrinologist for high prolactin levels and I am on medication for it. During the visit Dr. Smith he asked me if I produced any discharge or milk for my breasts, I said no. I've never experienced that symptom with my prolactin levels being high but I am aware that it can happen. But again, I had no such symptoms, ever. Throughout the visit he kept asking me if my boyfriend was good to me, he asked that question 3 times to be exact, each time I gave the same answer, yes. The problem arose when it was time to do a physical examination. He asked me to take off my shoes and my cardigan, then to sit on the medical bed, I did. He checked my reflexes and my breathing then… abruptly said he needs to check my nipples. Before I could get in a word or even comprehend what was said he reached into my shirt, reached into my bra, pulled out my breast and started squeezing my nipples, he did this to both breasts. I felt violated to say the least. There was no female in the room, he didn't ask me to change into a robe, he didn't explain why he was checking them or even asked me if it was okay to do so, he just went right in. I'm a 21 year old female and wasn't sure if this kind of stuff was "normal" for a neurologist to do so I didn't say anything, I just zoned out for the duration of the visit. I work with a doctor so I asked her if something like this was normal for a Neurologist to do and she said no. She explained that there should be a female in the room, he should have asked me to put a robe on and he should have explained why he needed to check my breasts. He did nothing of the sort and the doctor agreed that she would be uncomfortable if it happened to her and she would file a complaint, so I did. I made a report with the State Board of Medicine and should be hearing back from them soon. If you're a young female going to this Neuro just be aware and make sure you have someone with you at all times.

Dr. Smith took time to explain everything to me.

Though he tries to be amiable, I do not feel comfortable talking with him. This makes it hard to be open, since I can't even warm up to a conversation that is more relaxed, vs. purely diagnostic without me ever feeling at ease. That makes his "amiable" manner feel cool and professional, curt and impersonal. Not very welcoming, though it "appears" to be. I can confirm that this is not just my experience since another man observed his rapport with me in a meeting and understood when I felt cut off, without me telling him expressly. The frustration led to not having time to talk as openly as I'd like about what I had been experiencing, especially because I was still trying to figure it out and describe it myself. There weren't many exploratory questions that could help me gather key elements, just a black and white question with diagnostic conclusions, I am certain now that what I felt I needed to express was relevant, but was less in touch with how to describe it then. His… attitude didn't help.

Had EMG both upper extremities. Made diagnosis, explained disorder and optional treatments. Very thorough, pleasant and knowledgeable. aaaaaaai thought he was excellent neurologist.

With only one office visit Dr. Smith misdiagnosed me with Parkinson's disease. The office staff gave me a hard time in getting records. I went next to an excellent neurologist and a rheumatologist and was thoroughly tested and do not have Parkinson's. Dr. Smith wanted me back in 1 month, I never went back. He scared me and was not thorough in making a diagnosis.
