Dr. Rodney J. Poffenberger, MD

In another review of Rodney Poffenberger, from December 28, 2019, someone wrote the following: "I am 69 and have had numerous prostate exams and never experienced discomfort in the past but was in a lot of discomfort for two days after he did the exam." I had an experience similar to that reviewer's, but with much worse consequences. I have also had numerous prostate exams, performed by numerous doctors, and I have never experienced any pain as a result of any of them, except for one performed by Rodney Poffenberger, which did permanent damage to my body, and which has caused me to have horrible pain and suffering ever since. What Rodney Poffenberger did to me has ruined my life. Has anyone else been hurt by Rodney Poffenberger? If you have been, please share your experience in a review here.

Dr. Poffenberger was the urologist on call this morning. My husband has stage four prostate cancer and had just finished his 10 days of radiology. He hadn't been able to void urine in three days, so I called, as his urologist is a partner of Poffenberger. I asked him what to do; he cut me off, told me to go to the ER. Oh, I said. And he comes back with "What do you want? I can't get him to urinate over the phone." Wow. If it weren't for my children, who are docs and were advising us, we may have just given up then.

I was referred to him through my doctor because I had blood in my urine. I am a young female. I also was told by that same doctor who referred me to him that a had a large kidney stone. Upon my first appointment with him (3 months after the doctor visit) I spent a total of 15 minutes and I explained what happened to me “I have been told I have kidney stones. I had an x ray to confirm. I pee blood (pink) after exercise etc” and the only thing he said was “hmm, well since you pee blood after exercise we need to run a camera in your bladder to make sure nothing else is going on in there, referring to bladder cancer which while it is possibly for anyone it is EXTREMELY rare and unlikely in a young female my age who doesn’t smoke etc. he didn’t give me any form of reassurance and when I asked him if it could be due to my kidney stones he said “well I don’t know I mean, it could be but that’s why we’re doing the test to and sure”. Understandable but It would have been nice to have some… reassurance especially right before Christmas. He done a number of image testing on me, and even after he confirmed the stones was the likely problem caused, he still done the camera in the bladder test (cystoscopy). He then ordered me a 24 hour urine test and waited 10 months to call me with results! The results were abnormal meaning I had some things I needed to change in my diet in order to prevent more stones from forming. Luckily I made these changes on my own well before he called. I ended up in the hospital with an obstructed stones and a bad infection, I called his office and left messages but never heard back. Not surprised.. I now have a new urologist who is a female and who explains things in detail. She is very good at what she does and she has successfully completed my surgery without causing any pain or issues. I am back to somewhat normal now even with the stent placed. Take away: In my opinion dr poffenberger is a nice man, but doesn’t explain things to his patients the way he should. He doesn’t have very good bedside manors in my opinion & he doesn't care about putting his patients minds at ease. and last but not least, he waits months and months to provide results (and he didn’t even upload them online, so I figured my results were normal since I heard nothing back).

Trusted dr poffenberger to take care of my kidney stones too big too pass - well not only was he not successful in removing them but told my wife my right kidney was not functioning. Upon recommendation of a friend i went to Wake Forest to kidney specialist - stones were removed successfully and both kidneys r functioning. Would not recommend dr poffenberger to anyone

Efficient; considerate; extremely knowledgeable; straight up with the patient. There's none any better.

My husband has vascular dementia, but Poffenberg thinks he is capable to making a decision on his own. It took SEVEN MONTHS w painters tape on the floor to find the bathroom

Always ready to perform yet another procedure, which usually turned out to not have been necessary but always very billable. Undependable scheduling of appointments, yet unwilling to deal with patient needs (refills, for example) except during office visits. , Pleasant manner, but I stronglysuggest finding a more dependable, more patient-centered urologist

This doctor is always in a hurry, tells sexual jokes in his office, does not care as much as he should about patients and their families. He is very poor at diagnosing cancer. He takes people for granted and is not prepared when the patient comes in. He does not follow up good and is, in my opinion, an obnoxious quack.
