Dr. Semyon Zarkhin, MD

Dr Zarkin has been my dermatologist for several years. I have referred many friends and they think he is an amazing doctor too! Great personality, smart and he was able to diagnose someone right away that had been seeking help with a skin issue for many years. I can’t say enough about his care, he’s wonderful.

I am very happy with the care I receive from Dr Zarkhin, his professional staff, and the office staff. They are friendly and helpful, answering all of my questions and addressing all of my concerns.

I went to see the PA because I had a mysterious rash on my buttocks after returning from a family reunion in the Virgin Islands. An image of the developing rash was shown to Dr. Zarkin who told the PA to take a culture for herpes along with the other culture to check for bacterial infection. He also instructed that I start on an anti-viral medication until the results of the cultures were known.....in other words, he felt like it was herpes even though I questioned the apparent diagnosis, saying that it was not possible since I have been happily married for over 20 years, and no one in my family has ever had a cold sore. The PA's response was "most people have been exposed to herpes during their lifetime and it is quite commonly diagnosed in this office." I went home with some anger -- did my husband cheat on me? -- some anxiety -- how am I doing to deal with this for the rest of my life? -- but mostly extreme pain for the next six days (I literally could not sit down at all… during this time), and I didn't dare tell anyone what the doctor thought because I was ashamed. I called the doctor's office six days later because no one contacted me to tell me about the culture, but my rash was now a set of about 12-15 silver dollar sized open wounds that were only worsening and was told that the cultures were not back yet. An hour later, the nurse called to say that it was in fact not herpes but a staph infection and I should begin taking an antibiotic. I received a copy of the fax results which indicated that the culture had actually come back three days earlier (albeit a Friday) so I could have begun the antibiotic and not had the horrendous pain throughout the entire weekend. At first, I was simply relieved, and then when my husband discovered that the initial sore was spreading into deeper tissue (initial stages of cellulitis), I became very concerned. I went back to see Dr. Ballo the next day (because Dr. Zarkhin was not there), explained my previous experience, to which she replied that she would have done the exact same thing because "we see a lot of herpes on the buttocks in this office, and treatment is very time-sensitive." I asked if treating a Staph infection isn't equally time-sensitive, and she said that waiting six days before treating it was not unusual. I then asked if what she saw on me was typical before getting proper treatment, and she simply replied that I was on the right track with the right medicine. In my personal opinion, after having done quite a bit of research and talking to several other doctors, Dr Zarkhin made an incorrect judgement call based on a photo of my rash without ever speaking to me or seeing it in person. He put me on antiviral because he thought it was herpes which caused extreme emotional and physical pain to my family and me. Ironically, it turns out that two of my nieces and a nephew also got Staph infections during our stay in the Virgin Islands and their doctors immediately put them on antibiotics which cleared their infection within 4 days. I wonder if that was because they were children and could not have been exposed to the herpes virus yet.......hmmmm
