Dr. William Stuart Reid, MD

I was referred to Dr. Reid by my chiropractor after she had done all she could do for my neck pain. After getting an MRI to verify that I had two herniated cervical discs in my neck, Dr. Reid confirmed my chiropractor's diagnosis and immediately scheduled me for same day surgery at UT. Dr. Reid is amiable and a straight-shooter. He gets the job done efficiently and quickly whether that is in talking to you in the examination room or putting his 30+ years experience to work in the surgery room. If you require someone to baby you about your pain, he is not the surgeon for you. If you want relief from your pain, he's the best around.

Dr. Reid has operated on my neck three times, in 1991, 1995, and 2010. This guy is fantastic. He is VERY straight forward and to the point, which I really like. You can tell that he is very competent and confident by his attitude. I am COMPLETELY satisfied with his work for over 22 years. No, he is not a sympathetic, hold-your-hand type of guy. But if you want a SUPER competent neurosurgeon, this is your man.

Dr Reid is a brain and spine surgeon not a family physician that gives you 10-15 minutes to whine and cry about your issues. He's very "matter of fact" and Straight to the point. If he can help you SURGICALLY he will offer it to you with no guarantees. If you are going in for back pain or back problems, he is very straight forward and "tells you like it is". He is not going to hold your hand nor give you any false hope. He'll be the first to tell you there is no quick fix for back pain or back problems.. His job as a surgeon is to correct the problem even if it doesn't "fix" the pain. So if you are looking for a doctor to "sugar coat" things, avoid Dr Reid. If you want a proven surgeon with 30+ yrs of surgical experience then Dr Reid is the doctor for you. Just remember, there is not a spine doctor that can guarantee you'll be pain free from surgery. One final thing, just because you have back pain, doesn't mean he will offer you surgery. One final thing, he's been practicing for over… 30 yrs, he doesn't need your money. I highly recommend him as a surgeon.

I am a RN and went to Mr. Reid for back pain caused by a herniation. I had a discectomy to my L4, L5 region and it later proved unsuccessful. I told Mr. Reid about the pain and he did not believe me until a recent MRI showed a large disc herniation compressing the nerve root. The worst part about this is that I told him I was having quad pain and he said he had no idea what it was from. It took me 10 minutes to find this can be from the L2-L4 nerves, I dont understand this man at all, an inconsiderate surgeon no question. This is the rediculous part. I worked with one of his nurse practitioners in the past and she felt it was ok to discuss my injury with old co-workers, a complete HIPAA violation! When I explained this to Mr. Reid he said "We don't do that here!" I said an old co-worker I ran into told me it was the girl from your office, he replied "That didn't happen." There are plenty of respectable, professional surgeons out there, I suggest you find anyone but this clown.

Dr. Reid totally drops the ball with aftercare. If you have any problems, do not expect empathy or direct answers from him. He seems to want to get you out of the office as soon as possible. His staff are great- but if I did it over again, I definitely would have chosen a different surgeon- possibly one who cares!

I went to Dr. Ried due to a herniated disc in my neck. I had terrible pain from my neck down my right arm to my hand. He performed surgery to remove the disc. He replaced the disc with a bone graft and then stablized the fusion with a metal plate and four screws. The pre-op pain is gone. It has been almost three weeks and most of the surgical discomfort is gone also. Dr. Reid is very matter of fact, professional and not at all warm and fuzzy. That was fine with me as I didn't expect him to hold my hand. He does what he does very effectively and that is all I truly cared about. His office staff is exceptional, especially Michelle. Ask for her if you need help with your problem. She was wonderful!! Thank you Dr. Reid for returning me to full function.

FYI: My husband is now eating and interacting with the staff at Select Specialty Hospital in Knoxville since being released (kicked out) after he was given the gift of MRSA at UT. The doctor at SS at St. Mary's realizes the pain my husband is suffering and is working with him to help alleviate the pain. They have installed a drain pump in his surgical site and extracting the MRSA fluids. There are 6 patients at SS at St. Mary's who have been sent there with MRSA. I'll bet the farm they all came from UT Medical Center. God help you if you get referred to Reid!

He needs to re-evaluate the reason he went into practice is to take care of patients it is not the money.Patients are coming to you in a lot of pain seeking your help, please get over yourself and help people.Your staff is wonderful, but they can't makeup for your downfalls.He unfortunately is one of the doctors with the god attitude.
