Dr. Allison Martha Averill, MD

Dr. Allison Averill, Director of NeuroRehabiliation Services, specializes in the care and treatment of individuals with brain injury, neurological disorders and stroke. She also experienced in spasticity management and complementary medicine.

Dr. Averill received her medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, NJ, and completed her residency in rehabilitation medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation. In addition, Dr. Averill, who studied acupuncture at the University of California at Los Angeles, is board certified in medical acupuncture. She joined Kessler is 1992 as a staff physiatrist and was named director in 2000.

Actively involved in educating medical students and residents, she lectures extensively on traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis and acupuncture. She has also published numerous articles in national medical …journals. Her research initiatives have focused on the medical management of pain, as well as on behavioral management of individuals who have sustained a traumatic brain injury and treatment to improve their cognitive abilities. She has also conducted studies to evaluate the use of complementary medicine in treating acquired brain injury and spinal cord injury. Her research on the use of acupuncture for the treatment of dysphagia earned her second prize from the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture.

Dr. Averill was honored by her colleagues with the Henry H. Kessler Award for Medical Excellence in 2004.

She participates in several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the New Jersey Medical Society, Bergen County Medical Society and the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture
