As medical director for the National Pain Institute, Dr. Anthony Afong brings more than 15 years of experience to his work. The opportunity to make a difference in the lives of patients by improving their functional mobility and quality of life first drew Dr. Afong to the field of pain management.He holds a bachelor’s degree in zoology from the University of Florida and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of South Florida College of Medicine. He completed an internship focusing on internal medicine at the University of Utah and a physical medicine and rehabilitation residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Texas. Dr. Afong worked for five years in the pain management field and then finished an interventional pain management fellowship at the National Pain Institute where he has remained to work for every patient he sees. He is driven by the opportunity to help patients in pain maximize their functional mobility and quality of life while utilizing minimally invasive procedures …and limiting the use and dependence on medication. When coordinating options, Dr. Afong believes patients “should take an active role in their treatment and care to facilitate and maximize their outcome,” he said. Away from the office, Dr. Afong can be found outdoors either mountain biking, snowboarding, boating, or spending time with his family.

I was just talking to Christina letting her know How much I appreciate your front office help. In all the time I’ve been coming here it’s never been like this. You have Salma and Christina. I just don’t get it. It just never Been this way. Half the time people wouldn’t even look at me in the face. They were just checked you in and just did the bare minimum of working in your office. They just never seemed happy. They were never cherry people.I actually told Christina today that I don’t know how they do it. They’re working in a pain management office where I know and have seen patients That take it out on the front your office. Unfortunately I’ve seen office personnel that they were just not happy people! I don’t want to leave out Barbara who I consider to be the glue that keeps everybody together and works behind the scenes now. And last but not least is Dr. Irina I have gotten to like her a lot as my doctor. I just don’t want to ever see your office change because right now it’s the… best I’ve ever seen it since I started coming to your office. I just wanted you to know Dr. Afong.

Went to see the Dr. for significant back pain and he two sets of injections and that did the trick- golfing again 3 days a week

My visit was revealing. I came in with toe pain and through a variety of diagnostic tests I learned I needed a facet block. The consultant I spoken with said the needles were small, like needles that administer insulin. However YouTube tells a very different story, with pictures of 6" needles! When I called my insurance to see if the sirferu os covered I discovered Dr. Afong WAS NOT a participant with my insurance. ??. The consultant left a lovely message about how fortunate I am because even rhough I'm out of network my fee is minimal. Naturally this message was left on the wrong phone. Think it's time to find another doctor, IN MY NETWORK. Hopefully the next dr. will have scruples.

Easy to get an appointment, have never had a staff member be anything but polite and friendly, Doctor and other physician staff actually LISTEN! They are willing to try new meds and if those don't work, to fill out forms for insurance company requesting an exception to my coverage to get me the meds that WORK!
