Dr. Brett Smith, DO

We drive 4 hours for the care Dr. Smith gives. He is not only knowledgeable about her JIA, he has the unique ability to explain it on a level that we can understand without us feeling like we are being talked down to. Let's be honest. Some doctors have an amazing medical knowledge, but struggle with the bedside manner. Dr. Smith is not one of those doctors. He always spends a few minutes asking her about school activities she has mentioned in past visits and any new things she has going on. He also never makes the visits feel rushed.

We relocated to another state 4 years ago, but chose to drive 4 hours each was because of Dr. Smith and his staff. He is knowledgeable, caring and, although we know he is busy, he never makes us feel rushed.

I am shocked at some of the reviews posted here. I have been doing Dr. Smith for years and he has never been dismissive of any issues I have had. I have seen many doctors and have left feeling completely crazy because my pain seems to move between different joints. Dr. Smith has taken more time to both listen to me, and explain my condition than anyone I have ever seen before. He is very knowledgeable about various treatment options and worked persistently to help me find the best one for me. I feel lucky to see Dr Smith and am more than willing to drive over 30 minutes to do so as he is one of the most thorough physicians I have seen. The poor reviews on this page do not seem true to the experience I have had over time. One posted review complained that he mentioned adult coloring books as a way to reduce stress. All that indicates to me is that he is caring and looking at the whole individual and not just the symptoms someone is presenting in that moment. I feel sure that he explains… to many of his patients, myself included, the role stress can play in many of the conditions he is treating. I believe the fact that he is looking at lifestyle as well as medical treatments makes him a more skillful clinician. Too many doctors do not take the same time to listen as Dr Smith and simply try to medicate a problem away, which perhaps is what that specific patient was expecting. Fortunately Dr Smith is a better doctor than that.

I have been seeing Dr. Smith for years and he has always taken the time to sit and listen to me. Very knowledgeable and open to suggestions.

I recently saw Dr. Smith and felt very dismissed. I was diagnosed with several autoimmune disorders several years ago and he tells me since my bloodwork came normal that I have something called, “Amplified Pain Syndrome” and he told me everything I told he was checking off for that basically. He put me in a box and completely dismissed my story. I feel very hurt and I almost don’t want to see another specialist because of this experience.

He ordered blood tests but sent me away before they were performed with a page about fibromyalgia (which is not what I have, I don't fit the symptoms), so he had his mind made up already. Then I received a letter saying the test results are normal, he's going with the fibro diagnosis, farewell and good luck. They didn't even spell my name right. Nine months later I go to an orthopedist for a hand injury and learn I have the ulnar drift and joint degradation of someone far older. Strong symptoms-along with others- of rheumatoid arthritis. I'm now being referred to a competent rheumatologist who will do more than merely tick a few boxes and give up. After I left a message with Brett Smith's office regarding this, I have not received even the courtesy of a response. I might have been spared two foot surgeries, a hand injury and further physical degradation if he wasn't so set on dismissing me and sending me flying out the door.

I was diagnosed with RA 15 years ago and have seen Dr. Smith for the last 5 years. He listens, is open to suggestions, and has always been supportive of my pain. As long as he is in Maryville I will continue to see him.

Dr. Smith is very knowledgeable and helpful. He got me in quick and figured out what was going on when 2 other doctors had it wrong. Highly recommend him and would trust anyone to his care.

Dr Smith is very qualified in his field, quick to identify solutions. He listens well and is a caring doctor. His office staff is also very professional and efficient. I highly recommend him.
