Dr. Carl Tyler Shenkman, MD

I do not recommend seeing this doctor, especially if you have a chronic pain issue that is ruining your life. I have chronic migraines. Anywhere from 18 to 22 migraines a month. They last the entire day. Everything in my life is a struggle because of these migraines. I’m afraid I won’t graduate from college because I can’t function. I went to see Dr Shenkman even though he was far away because he took my insurance. He prescribed me two medications. A few days later, I let a MA know that the meds were making me very drowsy and not helping my migraines. Every specialist and doctor I have ever seen will notate these side effects and prescribe something else. Instead of doing this, Dr Shenkman refused to prescribe me anything else until I came back in and he saw me again. Please be aware, these medications were not opiates or even close to “pain meds”. These were very safe medications, not habit forming. A few things of importance. Dr Shenkman and his staff are aware that my copays are… $130. Also, I live 40 minutes away without traffic. I called both of his offices multiple times and after dealing with his staff that didn’t care at all about what I was going through, he never called me back after a solid week of me leaving messages to him and both of his offices begging them to help me and prescribe me something else. Like most people, I can’t afford to pay a $130 copay every time the wind blows in the wrong direction. I am a full time student, with a job and caring for my sick mother and special needs dog. It was all about the money, he just saw me 4 days prior. I still can’t believe he never called me back. This is the worst experience I have ever had with a doctor. I should have seen the red flags. He was overly touchy feeling, wasn’t very professional and he was complaining about the person that put in the computer system at the office and stating that he had no respect for them. He is simply not professional and lacks a great deal of empathy and self awareness. I have finally found a Neurologist that is taking my condition seriously and actively helping me. My condition has worsened since dealing with Dr Shenkman while he wasn’t treating me. The Neurologist I am seeing now insisted on an MRI immediately because of my symptoms, I tried to get Dr Shenkman to do this and he would not do it. He had zero sense of urgency. He gets to go home and the end of the day and live his life. I have to live with these migraines every day, I don’t get a break or a vacation. Do not waste your time and money with Dr Shenkman and his staff.

happy, cheerful and has a great sense of humor. when examining my father, he told him to lift his hands up to see his strength, and when he did, the doctor jokingly, as my father , " can I have your money". My father laughed so hard for the first time. Thank you Doc, you are wonderful

he is like Patch Adams.. great bedside manner, prompt and gets things done. No better neurologist in St Petersburg region

This physician is God. He is like walking on water. He comes into my hospital room, with a beam of sunshine, has this incredible bedside manner. I have heard the nurses call him " Patch Adams". He is bright articulate and gets right to the point.

First let me say you go to the doctor to get help. Dr. Shenman may not be personable but he is a VERY smart Doctor who comes up with a plan for his patients. The decor of the office could be improved some, but its just cosmetics. This is my second time around seeing Dr. Shenkman and I honestly wouldn't see another Neurologist. My orthopedic doctor referred me to Dr. Shenkman. I completely disagree with statements made about him not taking his time and listening. As a matter of fact the first time I saw him he came in the exam room and sat down and explained what was wrong and what he had a plan to help. Joe the therapist is also a great addition to the office. He has helped so much too. For ones considering seeing Dr Shenkmen you should go see him and form your own opinion of him. He is a brilliant doctor and if there is something wrong he will fix it to the best of his ability.

He came in to see me. Did not let me say more than a few sentences to him. He told me what he was going to do without even examining me. The only medication he offered me was methadone. I was complaining of low back pain and he felt it necessary to do some kind of EMMG testing in my arms for some reason. Then told me he needed to several procedures on me to burn the nerves in both my low back and neck. My neck was not even sore?

2 hours in office...overpriced...not a nice dr...spent maybe 5 minutes with me at the most...helpful staff that's about it.

you read some of the negative comments, and it appears those are the patients are most likely unemployed, government assisted, druggies who will not get their fix with this doctor. His knowledge is impeccable. He exams like no other doctor ever had on me. He comes up with a game plan. No druggies he, his not going to give you your fix, he is going to fix you. I have been to other physicians in the past year. One physician hold himself out as "pain doctor", only to realize he is just an anesthesiologist with no experience in medicine. I went to a neurosurgeon, only to find out that my family doctors told me to run fast away from him. I was at the point where I really just wanted relief, not masking my pain, relief. I was recommended by my family physician, to see Dr. Shenkman. He said this man is the smartest neurologist he ever had seen. My family doctor also said, not only is he intelligent, but he thinks out of the box in order to find help. I took him an examination, 2 mild… procedures and my pain was gone. I have been pain free for over 9 months. When I came across this website, I was curious to see what is said. I found that most negative comments are from rejects in society. I wanted to give a positive statement for this man, who should walk on water. Thank you Dr Shenkman,,

he does not give you any medicine for pain,because he does not think people need them.
