Dr. Chris Scott Banning, MD

Do NOT have your cataract surgery done by Dr. Christopher Banning or any doctor at the Cokingtin Eye Center in Leawood, KS. I have been told by three other ophthalmologists (two at KU Med Eye Clinic & one here in Lawrence) that nothing can now be done to correct the cataract surgeries I had in July & August of 2024. I have waited this long (May of 2025 now) to write this review as I had been told my sight “Might be better in a few months”. It is not. Banning did the 1st surgery on my right eye in July of 2024. The week following that surgery my regular eye doctor here in Lawrence did a follow-up inspection of that surgery. She told me that Banning had failed to remove all the cataract in my right eye during that 1st surgery. I called Banning & he told me personally on the phone that he would meet me at 12:15 at his office after my 1st surgery a few hours prior to my 2nd surgery to discuss my concerns. He forgot that meeting & did not show up for it. No one in his office had any… record that he scheduled that appointment. I had my 2nd surgery on that eye by Banning later that same day. It is still blurry on my right eye’s entire perimeter. When I went to have my third surgery (the 1st one on my left eye), I asked to have a discussion w Banning prior to that surgery as I was very concerned at this point. While on the surgical table, he came out & was dismissive of my concerns that my vision was still not up to par in my right eye. He interrupted me intentionally several times & stormed out of the room insinuating I was wrong & he was right. He could see what I saw! I wasn't angry previous to that, but I wanted clarity. This scenario was witnessed by Doug, the anesthesiologist. After Banning left, I was mad & concerned. I whispered to Doug an expletive. "I'm going to have a guy operate on my eye that is aggravated at me." I said the expletive again. One more thing. When I entered the room where I was to be prepared for my procedure, I was told to "hop up" on the surgical table by the nurse named Tammy. I almost had an unfortunate fall because the wheels had not been locked down on the table & it rolled away from me. Luckily, I am still pretty athletic for my age & I kept my balance. I caught myself as I fell backward w my right hand. Because the floor was a hard tile surface, I fear that the older & more frail patients I saw in the waiting room that day may have been injured in this same instance. I am having the following problems w my eyes: 1. As I said, I had to have two surgeries on my right eye. I then had a YAG laser treatment done by Dr. Scott Hickman in Lawrence on November 9th & 16th as my regular eye doctor said that might improve my blurriness. It did not. 2. After cataract surgery, I now see a black crescent on the lateral side of my left eye which obstructs my peripheral vision. 3. Although I have somewhat decent vision if I look straight ahead, both of my eyes are blurry around all the perimeter. This sometimes causes me some balance problems when I walk in public. Until my shoulder surgery three years ago, I was a competitive athlete & had excellent balance until my cataract surgery. 4. Previous to my cataract surgeries, I had reported a little bit of “dry eyes” to my regular doctor Sharon Green. Now I blink CONSTANTLY w my dry eyes & use eyedrops on numerous occasions throughout the day as my eyes are continually irritated. I never had this previous to the surgery. I also find it strange that only my left eye tears up (on the lateral side where the “crescent” is & the incision was made when I eat. I never had this before. 5. I see “starbursts” around bright lights at night, particularly in my left eye. I never have had this before either. 6. My new glasses give me double vision when looking peripherally. 7. I’ve never previously had “floaters”. I do now, especially in my right eye where I see up to three of them. 8. When I get tired at night & am watching TV, sometimes I have to close or cover my right

He did surgery on both eyes. I would highly recommend him and his staff. Excellent experience!!
