Dr. Craig Allen Kuhns, MD

My experience in back surgery is extensive. I was hospitalized for a week after the first then transported to rehab because of a snip of the dura sack. I did fine for a period, although I couldn't stand straight. Within time, screws came loose. More surgery by a different surgeon, two procedures and two weeks in the hospital and five weeks in rehab after a nerve was damaged and walking was a problem. My pain improved, but began to increase after a year. Soon, my pain mgmt specialist referred me to Dr. Kuhns. I had recent scans and xrays, which we view and he evaluated with my husband and me. He educated us far beyond anyone else about the issues, all the while being jovial and personable. He raised questions about secondary issues that turned out to be very helpful. And in the end, while surgery was required, he did a superior job. I was home in four days, walking and feeling good. He made certain we understood the importance of the recovery process and explained what could… go wrong if not adhered. He didn't want rehab for fear of overextending, bending, etc. I am three months out and doing wonderfully. My pain levels are low and my stamina is improving. Aside from the stellar job he performed, the hospital was high quality. The responsiveness and choices of pain management were highly effective and I was never in pain, which is not the case in my prior cases. Dr. Kuhns made frequent visits. My experience is a 10 out of 10 for clear communication, thoroughness in determining the primary issue, creating a partnership environment, bedside manner, and for having a staff that works to get you in and out with little wait. It was a refreshingly new and good experience and I highly recommend Dr. Kuhns and Austin Spine.

Best spine doctor in Austin/Lakeway area. I won't go into all the details but he is an amazing surgeon and actually cares about his patients well being.

Dr. Kuhns is amazing, just wish I could say the same about his office staff. The office manager has no business working at his office. I almost was not able to get my surgery cause she called my insurance company the day before my surgery to let them know what the procedure was. After my surgery, she again dropped the ball when she was to order my back brace. She tried to blame it on the hospital, but the hospital has record of them ordering it. Again, Dr Kuhns is an amazing doctor, his staff will not call you back the same and you have to make sure they are doing their jobs. I would recommend him, since he is a great doctor. Just make sure to keep up with the office, they seem to not care.

I had a lumbar fusion surgery with Dr. Kuhns. I had an excellent outcome, went from only being able to walk 10 minutes or so to being near pain free at 6 weeks out from surgery. The biggest complaint I have is with his support staff, specifically his Physician's Assistant and his Administrative Assistant. The AA can be very rude and uncaring. Also the PA really can't return calls in a timely manner - when a patient calls because he/she is in pain that call should be responded to urgently. If she can't do it herself she needs to delegate, waiting is never fun, but waiting in pain is torturous. I would return to Dr Kuhns regardless due to his technical skill and my excellent result. I found him to be an excellent diagnostician and surgeon. I also would not hesistate to recommend him to others, but I would caution them about the PA and AA. All other office/nursing/support staff treated me extremely well - Responsive to my needs and very professional in demeanor.

Dr. Kuhns did my lower back spinal surgery. I feel this surgery was a success. I am pain free in my lower back. Returned to activites that I could not do prior to the surgery. His medical team from registration to checkout is pleasant and knowledgeable. Dr. Kuhns does a excellent job of explaining the surgery options. He has a exceptionally good medical staff. I will not hesitate to see Kr. Kuhns when needed and to recommend him and his medical team to a friend. A 4 **** surgeon.

His Administrative assistant is exceptionally rude everytime I talk to her. His Physician's assistant seems caring in person, but don't call her with a problem - she can't seem to return phone calls. The reception staff are excellent, it's his personal assistants that could use some therapy.

I have had multiple procedures with Dr. Kuhns. He has also performed 2 complicated surgeries on me. He is amazing! He is so careful, conscientous, humble and compassionate. I am a nurse and can say I have never seen a Dr. like him. I trust him fully with my life. He is so thorough with me and I know he reaaly cares about me as a person. His foolow up care and accessibilty to me thru email and his cell if necessary.
