Dr. Darren Loran Hoover, MD

I always suffered from double vision but mainly when I was tired or drinking or high over the years I think it did get a lil worse or I was just thinking about it more but I came to him because I heard Technology changed and there might be something he can do about it in the past I told there was nothing you can do about it so he quickly talked me into surgery and I regret it I use to have a basketball shot and now I can notice double rim but before I could shoot a basketball with out noticing double rim I look a people and notice double of there eyes mouth and face when talking but I just got some glasses and I think it helps with that all thoe he didn’t recommend glasses I just feel like he didn’t understand me and jumped straight into surgery I regret the surgery a lot

I’ve gotten the impression that the services provided to my young child is subpar. Eye testing and subsequent prescriptions are based on arbitrary visual recognition tests using poorly worked images, some of which I would have trouble identifying let alone a 3-4 year old child. Dr. Hoover’s manner is somewhat strange or robotic, almost as If he is talking through you. Several times he has proffered results in defiance of my child’s inability to recognize the images and later letters on the screen saying that things keep getting better when observations at home are that nothing has changed. I wish I had went to a different practitioner sooner. Now that his schedule is cleared he seems to be pushing clients towards surgery. The wait times in this office are absurd. Expect to wait an hour - two hours from the time of your scheduled appointment. Dr Hoover tip toes through the halls like a fairy. Staff is generally pleasant and seemingly competent.

Both time I have been there, the Dr. just leaves, so I guess I leave the room (no instructions) and then front desk person does not have a file on me or know what to do with me.But Dr and support staff seem VERY competent, which is the important item.

Dr. Hoover's office operates like a well-oiled machine, not unlike other specialists office. He came highly recommended to me by my pediatrician as well as other mothers whose children have severe and in one case rare eye issues. I believe Dr. Hoover to be an excellent doctor, knowledgeable and effective. I also find him to be patronizing and impatient to parents and patients and his staff even worse. When my son was being evaluated by one of the nurses (phys asst, not sure) she did not introduce herself or make any attempt to help him feel comfortable. He resisted "trying his hardest" to read letters as is typical with 5 and unders. Rather than engaging him in a positive way the nurse actually told him "You need to try harder. There will be lots of things in life that you have to work hard for not just this reading these letters. You better start trying harder now if you want to be successful in life." Not what I wanted to hear, and certainly not helping my son's desire to… be a better patient who doesn't fear the eye doctor. I would say it was a fluke, but in the three times we have been to the office it's always disappointing in terms bedside manner. Typically Dr. Hoover is so inundated with patients that he is eager to evaluate, write his notes, and shove you out the door. I think he is actually probably a nice guy who is too overworked, but it's just a hunch. He is certainly not inviting the parent to ask any questions. Oh, and if you are considering bringing another child along with you I'd advise against it. He commented to me after the first visit "I see you have your hands full" as a way of brushing me off. Admittedly my baby was not happy, but come on it's a pediatric practice. Isn't that kind of par for the course? And, if we hadn't been sitting in the waiting room for over an hour to see him we might not have had such a cranky baby. All this said, we are not leaving him. After leaving a local optometrist and joining Dr. Hoover my sons eyes are improving. He changed the prescription dramatically based on his new evaluation and it seems to be working. Cudos to his expertise.

Dr. Hoover took excellent care of my son and his vision was corrected very quickly. He was very kind to a worried mom and took the time to listen to my concerns while answerring all of my questions and my son's as well.
