Dr. David Russell Mckenzie, MD

My husband was having severe pain and was sent to Dr McKenzie. Tests were done and we went back for followup. Was told he had nothing showing that caused pain, and to contact him if it returned again. A week later we went back and he asked why we were even there as there was NO diagnosis for his discomfort! Then, he quickly wrote out a prescription for a cream and tossed it at my husband. This doctor made us feel we were foolish to be there! Within two weeks, we were able to get into UAB and on this visit was told it appeared to be a circulatory concern. It was. A diagnosis was made and medicine prescribed. By the way, we threw that prescription away!

Very thorough, professional, and knowledgeable. He explains things in such a way that patients can understand the problem and/or procedure required. I completely trust Dr. McKenzie in his professional care and his ability to diagnose and treat any problem I may have or to refer me to a specialist if he deems necessary. I have been a patient at his clinic for over 40 years.

Updating computer system and somehow it messed up and I was not billed properly (at the time I did not realize this), so they turned my account over to a collection agency. Did not even realize this until it showed up on my credit report. So, my parents contacted them and since it had already gone to collections, they paid the collection agency. This was in 2004. Now it is 2014, and I was admitted through the ER at East Alabama Med. Ctr, and since I had a kidney stone again, they tried to schedule me for a urology appt. with this office, but the office staff told the nurse that I had an unpaid balance of $2000, so they would not even see me. Keep in mind that I am now pregnant with twins, and having another kidney stone at this time is horrible. I was not impressed with Dr. McKenzie back in 2004, but felt I had no choice but to see him again since it was an ER situation and I was extremely concerned about my babies. And neither I nor my parents ever received a bill from their… office during this 14 year period of time. My parents contacted the office and were told to contact the collection agency (after 10 years) and work it out with them. The bill, of course, WAS paid in full, yet I was still in their computer system as having an unpaid bill. I was totally humiliated during my time in the ER and not only will I never go to East Alabama Medical Center again, but will never be subjected to an incompetent dr. off ice as this. My best advice is to look further for urological care.

I have been seeing Dr. McKenzie for approximately 5 years and have never had any problems with staff, appointments, etc. I believe the longest wait I have had was 30 - 45 minutes and that happened once. He takes the time to discussion your condition, explaining in layman terms and discusses treatment(s).

- Took only one blood test at a time- Had to schedule new office visit to review test.- At that visit..when he entered the room, he came in talking loudly Well, looks like you got a brain tumor!! The door was still opened as he was walking in saying that. Threw me for a loop...I commented, "I never heard such!" His reply was "Well, you didn;t go to Medical School!".. He wanted to have more blood taken..Three more trips..three more office visits... Only one blood test doen each time...Took pretty much the summer of 2007. I had to walk to another bldg for each separate blood tests. I asked the lab there if that unusual to order only one test at a time..they said he was the only doctor who did so. They too thought it was most usual! Thus, looks like he was banking on being able to charge for additional office visits rather than having several items tested at the same time.- Final visit..he admitted he was wrong to make such an inital diagnosis.-..This doctor tends to suddenly, just walk… out of the room..the patient then just thinks he's going to get something..He doesn't say..I'll be right back...he is simply gone!! I got use to that...so, on one of the visits I was ready for him..and I stood up and said, "Wait a minute, I want to know more about why you made such a drastic diagnosis initially when you were not in any position to place a patient in such an alarmed state, and to have entered the patient room with such unprofessional manner as if you were just giving me the morning stock report. He didn't seem to get it...I shared this information with my primary care doctor and he said he'd never refer any more of his patients to him....My suggestion is..stay clear. I cannot imagine and understand how he's been in business so long...I'm thinking he needs to turn in his license..just saying...

he does not spend any time with you, in fact, for my follow up visit,after my surgery, the asst. came in to talk to me, until I asking questions he could not answer because he had not seen what the doctor had seen. He seems to just keep you coming back over and over, in my opinion, he could have done in half the office visits. Will not go back to him.
