Dr. Deborah Kuan-Mei Chen, MD

When she was a 1st year resident, a seemingly nice Dr Chen, introduced herself as an attending OBGyn at my fifth unmedicated delivery and second induction. She was only months into residency, something I didn't learn until after my time at the hospital. I am fine with students, but had I known she was so green, I wouldn't have consented to her doing any internal exams/procedures as these are very difficult for me even with an experienced provider. I would have certainly given very different weight to her recommendations and likely exercised my right to a second opinion, but that opportunity was taken from me. My pitocin was too high. My insistent requests to turn it down were ignored in late labor, despite my contractions being very long with no breaks and good progress. Dr Chen urgently advised medical procedures during L&D. When I said no, she shoved the fetal monitor into my belly extremely hard to convince me. At one point the nurse helping with this was questioning if they… should stop when I demanded she stop. She declined and continued until I allowed the procedure. I asked for Dr Chen to stop the procedure multiple times. I managed to actually say the words, "I withdraw consent." I told her to get her hands away from me. She ignored me. My baby was not in any distress. I was starting to black out because of the pain/injury she was causing me. I feared her. She was torturing me. I told her the baby was coming, and would be here in the next 5 minutes. I had a history of very fast second stage labors. I told her as much and it was in my records. She contemptuously dismissed me and said that the baby wasn't coming for a while. Right on queue, a few minutes later my husband caught the baby. He later told me she was hollering for the nurse to get the delivery cart from somewhere down the hallway and she wasn't even gloved up yet. While experience may improve skills, it does not change that this doctor lied, violated consent, and assaulted me. Those things aren't accidents or unique to residency. Do yourself a favor and find a doctor/practice that you can trust.
