Dr. Dexter Donald Koons

I was a patient of Dr Koons until he closed his practice due to issues with his being a pain management specialist and the regulations that were put in place about 6 months to a year before he closed his office for the last time. He did a great deal of work on me including carpal tunnel surgery on both hands, an ulnar nerve transposition on my right arm and lastly two neuro stimulator implants and removals for occupational neuropathy.

Would never go back to his office I have never in my 63 years of life and seeing over 50 Dr's met anyone as rude as him and his staff is.

I have been in pain for a long time ,from back and neck. I need surgery,but I don't know what to do. Doctor Koon's is very understanding and I do think he care's about the people he see's in his office, but now he has taken everyone off of pain med's. What do we do now with all of our pain. Just because you the doctor took the pain med's away ,doe's not mean the pain is going away. thing's are now real bad, From all the pain ,I am having a very hard time. I was having a stroke,from all the strain it put's on my body. thank God the hospital took care of me and I got there in time. I just don't know what to do for the furture. I do thank Dr. Koon's for the help in the past, but what about the pain I will live with in the furture ????

Office forgets to fill your prescription, and the doctor makes you wait hours for him to sign it!!! It only takes a few seconds to sign a script. My mother in law has had 40 something knee surgeries, and back surgery too! She needs these meds, or else she'd die from withdraws. Throws it side and calls the next patient. Come on! Front desk people are to busy talking about other patients loud enough for everyone to hear, then to do their jobs! I still think the doctor is the worst out of it all.

My initial visit and several follow up visits I was seen by Dr. Koons. Temperment wise he had good and bad days as we all do. His office staff and billing system could use mch improvement, but he runs a very busy office. In beginning waiting time was ridiculous but greatly improved. The main thing is ater many years of bieng in severe pain he helped me with a pain pump. If I needed an increase in meds, I was always seen immdeiately. All in all Dr.Koons is an amazing doctor who does not stop trying methods until he helps you. He haad 1 Nurse Practioner who was great and 1 PA,who should be an MD who were outstanding. After all when it comes down to it personalities are low on the totempole. It's the pain and the final controlling of it that truly matters. Dr. Koons took care of this main problem and I admire and respect him for this.

It took almost 2 yrs to get my first appointment for pain management 6 or 7 yrs ago. I had been in constant pain for about 10 yrs from a lower back injury and that was what I first went to him for. He still hasn't done anything to my lower back to repair the damaged disc's. 4 yrs ago he did an operation on my neck and took the back half off of 2 vertebrae, C-5 & C-6, to relieve pressure on the spinal cord from bulging discs due to degenerative disc disease. That was the most painful thing that I have ever been through in my life! It has taken 4 yrs for my neck to get a little better but I'm still in constant severe pain from this operation. Because of this operation I have to take over 500 mg of Morphine a day just to try to keep my pain level below extreme. On a 1 to 10 it never gets below a 5 and is usually a 8 to a 9. What really sucks is this will never get any better and I will have to live with this constant pain for the rest of my life. What ever you do, don't let this guy… operate on you until you get a second opinion, then have somebody else do it!

I have been seen by several M.D's, D.O's, P.A's, you name it for a condition I have had for quite some time. It may take a while to get in to see this doctor or one of his P.A's but feel it well worth the wait to get in. He never has sugar-coated my problems and may seem a little rough, especially in the beginning. However, he does have some great Credentials if you stop long enough to notice them on the walls in his office. Other doctor's have tried to play pain management and I landed in the hospital more than once because of one of their OD's. Yes, as a pain management doctor he does regular UA's for more than one reason. Dr Koon's and his PA's deal with a very difficult clientel on a daily basis. I am sure they see their share of those who want a "candy store" more than help for a Legitimate pain issue. I like Dr. Koon's honesty. His PA's have been nothing but great with me the times I have been in their care. His office staff have always treated me in a Professional manner as… well. A little short of time, but their office is very busy. If you can deal with a little roughness in the beginning and truely need a great pain-management doctor I would highly Recommend Dr. Koons.

I don't think this doctor is very smart he is treating a patient for a narcodic addiction treats him on medicine he should be on and then believes the patient when they tell him they are in pain and need pain medicine and doesn't make them give a ua to see if they are taking pills already. He belived the patient and continues to give them strong pain medicine without even thinking twice. He's giving pain meds to a person who is addicted to them and doesn't hesitate or bat an eye when writing the script.

I showed up for my appointment,(it took 6 weeks to get in) and they had rescheduled me for two weeks later. They said they had notified me that day. I live in a different city and had to drive in. I was on the rode when they called to reschedule me. It wasn't even considered to try and work me in when I arrived. Finally when I did get to see the Dr. two weeks later, the office was dark and had a dirty old look to it. The receptionist's were overwhelmed and very short. The Dr. was very harsh and only wanted to know if I wanted surgery or not. I was to stunned by the seriousness of his diagnosis to make that decision then. He would not give me anymore information about my condition on a whole untill I made a decision to do surgery or not. He appeared upset when I asked if he would mind my getting a second oppinion. Then he wouldn't prescribe any medication unless I was his patient or not. I had been in pain waiting to see him all this time. I left in a daze.
