Dr. Donald Gerard Hope, MD

I was referred to Dr. Hope by my long time pain management doctor for a herniated disc in my neck. I was told it needed surgery to relive the pain and nerve compression. I called Dr. Hopes office and spoke to one of the managers. She scheduled me for a consultation for in a few days. The day before my appointment she called and asked for my MRI report. According to her, Dr. Hope looked at it ( not even the MRI films, just the report) said he wouldn't operate on me and that my insurance would never pay for this. So they cancelled the appointment. I went to see another well respected spinal surgeon who did look at me, my report, and my MRI images and told me I did need surgery (an soon). He said insurance was not an issue as I tried epidurals and other means of addressing the pain. But this wasn't just a bulging disc, I had a broken disc that was pushing on a nerve. Dr. Hope never even bothered to look at me, my images, or review my history. If he did all of this and didn't want to… operate then fine. But to turn me away based solely on an MRI report I thought was cruel. I was warned by my pain med doctor that Dr. Hope can be "a bit harsh" and that I should not be "dramatic about my pain". I can see why I was warned. I read Dr. Hope's reviews and it seems that I am not alone.

Concussion patients beware - does not know or support post concussive findings.

His medical opinions are those of what will line his pockets the most. Do not trust your life to this man. Concussion patients-stay clear, unless you are paying the bill.

I cannot say enough positive things about Dr. Hope. He is thoughtful, professional, caring, empathetic and -- obviously -- incredibly skilled and talented. I went to Dr. Hope after suffering from leg pain for five years. I became so used to chronic pain that I felt it was my new normal. Three months after my first consultation with Dr. Hope, I am pain free and energetic. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate and admire Dr. Hope and his entire team. They are the best of the best. Truly a Godsend to me.

Great doctor. I have had a great experience with Dr Hope When i had my surgery he was kind and compassionate prior, then afterwards he followed up with me to make sure I was ok. Great doctor, very knowledgeable and professional office environment.

Came to Dr, Hope after a really bad experience with another doctor. I had lost a lot of faith in doctors due to my prior experience. Once seeing him, I was welcomed by a hand shake, a real hand shake (not the noodle kind) and eye contact. Dr, Hope checked me out all the while engaging me and asking what symptoms I was experiencing. I explained the hand and shooting needles but the worst were the migraines. So, Dr Hope looked at the MRI and explained what was going on and my options. Long story short, had the C6 fused and woke up with very little needle pain, but just after 2-3 days my migraines were gone. I am very happy with Dr. Hope and would recommend him to my own family if needed. Thank you for fixing me and making me grow a little .5 mm. Not much but it all counts.

First opinion from other doctor was "to live with it". Dr. Hope diagnosed quickly and explained what the options were, chances for success and risks. Subsequent surgery was successful and recovery was as predicted. Two thumbs up for Dr. Hope.

I was struck by a cab while in a crosswalk and suffered a neck injury which involved the C5-C6 verterbrae being embedded into my spinal cord. I ended up going to three different neuro surgeons for opinions and all three, who were excellent, strongly recommended a discectomy. I did substantial research and talked extensively to all three and ended up going with Dr. Hope. It was unquestionably one of the best medical decisions I have ever made. Dr. Hope explained every aspect of the surgery thoroughly, and answered all of my questions in detail. I also had the surgery at Reston Hospital, which was another great choice. At Reston Hospital, Dr. Hope was able to bring in his entire team, from anesthesiologist to OR nurse to OR techs and the surgery went like clockwork. (Reston Hospital gets very high marks from me as well, and staying overnight in a private room with excellent nurses allayed any fears I had about hospitals.) I have heard complaints about the bedside manner of some… surgeons, and that was absolutely not the case with Dr. Hope. He was the last person I saw before I went under, and the first person I saw when I woke up from anesthesia, and his entire OR team was excellent. Dr. Hope checked on me the next day, and I followed up with his Neuro PA, Alfia, who was also excellent. I am nearly pain free and have significantly more mobility than I had previously. Obviously someone working on your spine is a very big deal, but I would recommend Dr. Hope without hesitation.

Dr.Hope did an outstanding job on my neck surgery. He was personable,clearly stated what the operation would entail and what to expect after the surgery. I recommend him without reservation.
