Dr. Douglas J Chonko, DO

Between my husband and myself we have had 5 surgeries with Dr Chonko. He is personable, informative, and most of all a good surgeon.

He is not board certified as an orthopedic surgeon. Ruined my leg.

I had a knee replacement done by Dr. Chonko in 2013. He was very nice and seemed like he wanted to help me. Well, mine didn't turn out to be a typical case. I never got full flexion and extension of my leg. He said it was arthrofibrosis. Ok, fine. After several manipulations and a revision and therapy. Still not able to bend my leg. Every time I saw him I noticed he became less and less interested, to the point where when I'd go in to see him months later he would just sit there and look at me, and offer another MUA and wait for me to say yes or no. When a surgeon doesn't care what happens to you anymore it's time to stop seeing him, you're just wasting money. To this day I still can't bend or fully flex my leg. It seems some surgeons are just in it for the accolades and money. As long as everything goes as they plan, they are happy with you. Another notch for their ego. But if something is complicated, they can't handle it and they don't have time for you, nor do they really want to… see you anymore. I have seen a couple of surgeons since with the same experience. If you can't help a patient, at least have the compassion to send them to a doctor who can. I will continue to pray who look for a surgeon who is in it for the long haul.

Dr Chonko scheduled a follow up visit after my initial visit. He then advised me that I should cancel the appointment if the condition progressed as he described. I felt this was an excellent way to proceed and eliminated the need for a subsequent visit. I appreciated that he valued my time and did not want me to come for a visit just to be told that the problem was resolved.

Dr. Chonko is an excellent Doctor and Surgeon. He has operated on me 4 times in the past and I have a right knee scope scheduled for 6-28-16. The problem is not with Dr. Chonko. It's with the office staff. as of 13 days before the procedure, I have still not been scheduled!!!! In the past, all of my procedures were scheduled at least 2 weeks before. I already scheduled my pre-op testing but still have not had my surgery schedueled. Not sure why. Also, it is very hard to get in touch with anyone at his office. I know he is very much in demand and respected but the office people should get back with callers especially when it pertains to scheduling of the surgery. But, like I said, Dr. Chonko is excellent!!!

Did a bilateral knee replacement on my family member. Did not do a thorough pre-surgical workup, as my family member ended up in respiratory failure d/t a condition that should have been caught. At a follow up appt the Dr had very little to say, did not educate us in precautions or further expectations. It was like pulling teeth to get answers. Some serious social skill issues.

Dr. Chonko is an excellent surgeon. My only complaints are with his office staff. It took three months for them to schedule my surgery and when I called them to get antibiotics for a dentist appointment, his staff told me that I had to get them from my dentist. It's Dr. Chonko who said I need to take them, not my dentist, so his office should be calling in the prescriptions!

I was seen at Cuyahoga Falls Gen Hosp when I slipped and fell at work and fractured my kneecap. Dr Doug Chonko was my physician that afternoon. He was very gentle and considerate when delivering the news that it was ,indeed fractured. He took care of me for the next 6 months . I felt I was in the best of care.

Dr drilled at angle causing implant to sit crooked caused swelling and pain, glue pulverized put up with it for 4 years. Had to get revision.

Dr. Chonko did a bilateral knee replacement on my mother. She went to ManorCare Akron for her rehab. She was there for one month and did very well, partly because of the surgery and how well it was performed and partly because of the rehab given to her by the staff at ManorCare! Dr. Chonko not only followed up with her at the hospital, but also came to see her on the weekend, and then again at the skilled nusring facility while she was rehabbing her legs. She is in less pain now that she was prior to the surgery, she had no cartilidge left in either knee and had "needed: knee replacements for ten plus years! She is very happy and I would recommend Dr. Chonko to any orthopedic patient looking to have surgery!
