Dr. Monquen Huang, MD

My mother has Myasthenia Gravis, a potentially devastating autoimmune disease with frightening symptoms and possible fatal complications. She was going into crisis when we were referred by her PCP to Dr. Huang as a neurologist. We went in frightened and overwhelmed by what we had read about MG, and what we were seeing symptomatically in Mom, and found a young man who was amazingly patient and compassionate. He was very calm and well-spoken as he examined her and gave us his diagnosis of what she was experiencing and what could be done about it. Of the choices he gave us, we took the least invasive one to begin with. He was patient and kind and explained his concerns about our choice, but supported us in our decision. When we found that she was continuing to decline we called him and said we were ready to do the more invasive, frightening-sounding (to us) intervention, but we had lost a little time and it was helpful, but did not bring her out of her crisis. After three weeks… she began to decline again. In the meantime we were guided to Dr. Lewis at Cedars-Sinai, the head of neuromuscular research there. He and Dr. Huang began to collaborate on Mom's care and, after 18 days in the hospital, 8 of which were on a respirator, through their amazing combined care and incredible cooperation with us and with each other, my Mom came through a crisis that brought her home on hospice, but she came home. Due to their continued care over the next month or so, she was released from hospice and is now back on her original medication regimen for her MG. Dr. Huang was extremely knowledgeable about Myasthenia Gravis and always recommended what turned out to be the best course. We were so very impressed with his care, as he talked to Dr. Lewis every day and they determined together what the next best thing for Mom would be. He was always available to my sister and I whenever we needed him at the hospital (she was at Torrance Memorial), and met with us there several times to discuss what was going on and how to best proceed. My sister and I didn't always agree on what the right course to take was, but Dr. Huang was so very patient with us, answering all our questions, giving us as much information as he could, then meeting with us again the next day to see if we had come to a decision. I really feel like I cannot say enough about how wonderful Dr. Huang is. We had a severely handicapped son who lived to 18, and we have had more than our share of working with specialists. Often we found them to be rather removed, and some even a little cold, as they tended to view whatever specific thing in their specialty was going on with our son. It was difficult to push that aside and listen to them essentially talk about our son as "a nervous system", or a "digestive system". Dr. Huang cares about the whole person including their emotional well being. My mother is now staying in Oregon with my sister. As a result of the move, we no can longer have Dr. Huang as her neurologist. Right to the very last day he was her neurologist, he was available to us to advise and make the transition to another doctor as smooth as possible for her and for us. Dr. Huang, thank you again and again for your knowledge and excellent care, your availability to answer questions and address concerns, and your great patience and compassion. You are a wonderful man and an exceptional doctor. You are a credit to your profession and we are so thankful you were there for us.

Dr Huang listens patiently and answers questions clearly. He seems to know what he is doing. He's presently managing my myosthenia gravis.
