Summary
When Dr. Elizabeth O’Connor started medical school, the thought of working as a plastic surgeon hadn’t crossed her mind. She was, instead, considering something more behind the scenes.“I went into medicine thinking I’d do something that’s not directly involved with patient care, so I considered radiology,” she says. “As I explored different fields of medicine, it became very apparent that I needed to do something that involved my hands and direct patient contact.O’Connor found that in the plastic surgery department while in medical school.“It was a hand surgery rotation in the plastic surgery department,” she says. “It was a field I knew nothing about. I knew what’s on TV and it’s totally different than that. We cover things from head to toe. There are no real limits to plastic surgery.”Fast forward to today. O’Connor sees people every day as a surgeon with Plastic Surgery & Skin Specialists by BayCare Clinic. She treats people seeking cosmetic and non-cosmetic surgical …procedures.“I like being able to physically change things with my hands,” she says. “At the end of the surgery, it’s done. Something has actually changed. We aren’t waiting months for results because I can see the difference at the end of each surgery, which is really cool.”O’Connor thoroughly enjoys interacting with people and making a difference in their lives. That’s cool, too.“I like working with all my patients because I get to see a mix of cosmetic and reconstructive patients,” she says. “I will say it’s really rewarding to work with the breast cancer patients. They’re in a really rough position and being able to help them through it and get them to the other side is so rewarding.”Outside of the office, O’Connor stays active and spends quality time with her husband and two daughters.“I wake up and go to the gym, come back home and get the kids ready, then come into work,” she says. “At night, we usually have kids’ sports almost every night of the week, like soccer or gymnastics. I also do woodworking and gardening. I’ll take the dog for a walk.
