Dr. Gautam Phookan, MD

I had Dr. Phookan and he was to place a shunt into my ventricle to drain off excess spinal fluid. He went straight through the ventricle and had the shunt actually sucking in part of my brain which caused me to undergo a second surgery done by a different surgeon. This was done 9 months ago and my head still isn't healed properly.

I have had back surgery my back is alot worse than before surgery Im suppose to be healed by now. Right now I cant even move without the pain putting me in tears.

I had a 4-5 disk surgery back in 2005. As of Dec 2016, I still am going strong and pain free!!! I have recommended Dr Phookan for years and continue to do so. He has quiet bedside manner and always listened and answered my questions. Excellent neurosurgeon.

Dr. Phookan operated on my brain and removed a tumor. He did a remarkable job and is an experienced, excellent neurosurgeon. I would highly recommend him and I am indebted forever to him for his skills. I am shocked at the ratings shown on this website. He is a highly demanded professional, so he is direct, to the point, and on schedule. I like this in a doctor. Some may view this as rushed, but his time is valuable. He is a neurosurgeon! His office staff is always nice and making an appointment is a simple phone call. I have a feeling that the other "patients" who rated him low are either bogus or chronic whiners

He operated on my father 5 years ago after seeing many many doctors. My father was 82. His back has been doing awesome ever since.

my mother who took care of herself up untill he (went in and scrapped the bottom of her spine to clean it up and ease the pain) has not walked since the day she walked into the hospital 1 year later she still cant walk is in severe pain all the time is now having seizures due to muscle relaxers and pain meds, cant tell you her birthdate cannot eat without help, this dr is a joke, and i have heard other people have had the same experiences with him I just wish I had heard them before he severed my moms spine, or what ever he said happened, now she has to live in nursing home and her life expectancy is shortened extremely.

my experience with this dr was very very very poor to put it kindly. after 3 back surgeries i am worse off than what i was before. he put one of the screws through a facet joint in my spine causing it to degenerate and put pressure on the nerves. i have very severe pain in my back and right leg and ive lost about 80% of the feeling in my right leg. but everytime he supposedly look at my xrays and scans he would constantly say that the hardware was positioned well and he didnt know what the problem was. i had to go to the cleveland clinic to get properly diagnosed and fine someone who actually knew what he was doing. dr. phookan has ruined my life and another one of a family friend who has brain surgery and he put the shunt in crooked and caused alot of severe complications because of it. someone needs to do something about this dr. he does not need to be practicing medicine and is a completely disgrace in the medical field
