Dr. Harith H. Mushtaq

Harith H. Mushtaq, MD,  is an assistant professor for the Department of Surgery at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston). He treats teens, adults, and seniors and works to build a partnership with his patients on their journey back to health.
He is passionate about fair opportunities in health care and empowering patients to make their own treatment decisions to maximize their quality of life. Dr. Mushtaq uses his clinical knowledge, technical skills, and experience to change patients’ quality of life and provide an excellent outcome.
Dr. Mushtaq is proud to drive advancements in robotic colon and rectal surgery and bring the most current, state-of-the-art technology right to the heart of the communities. When compared with other types of surgery, he has noticed that robotic surgery patients have fewer complications and less pain, scarring, and blood loss. There is also less need for narcotic pain medication and also shorter hospital stays. …These benefits help patients return to their normal, daily activities faster. He looks forward to providing evidence-based medicine for patients to achieve desired outcomes.
Dr. Mushtaq received his medical degree from the University of Baghdad College of Medicine. He completed the general surgery residency program at the Johns Hopkins Hospital -Department of Surgery and University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, McGovern Medical School. After graduating from surgical residency, Dr. Mushtaq completed a Colon and Rectal Surgery fellowship at McGovern Medical School.
His areas of interest include colon cancer, rectal cancer, robotic-assisted surgery, laparoscopic minimally-invasive colorectal surgery, total abdominal colectomy, cancer screening, colostomy creation and reversal, diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel diseases, chronic constipation, anal fissure, rectal bleeding evaluation, hemorrhoid ligation (hemorrhoid banding), hemorrhoid removal, and rectal abscess treatment.
During his free time, Dr. Mushtaq enjoys traveling, reading, swimming, cooking, and spending time with his family and friends.
